Ok, so you weighted down a pillow case holding straw (that was rinsed for 5 minutes) and placed this in an OPEN pot (with a cooking thermonitor in it) and cooked at 170 degrees F for an hour... Then you took 3/4 of one PF style pint jar (fully colinized) of B+ and grounded them up in the blender... you then mixed this with the cooled drained pasterized straw..... How sterile were you when you were mixing the straw and PF cake spawn? Also I would think that much water would evaporate with a hot boling pot of water... at anytime during the 1 hour of pasterization did you have to add water? Thanks for your time man! There looking awesome. (so.. ah, naturally I had to ask you 20,000 questions!) hehe

No pins yet..I wish there were though. You have my method correct. I used alcohol to wipe everything down with. I used my hands which were washed w/ antimicrobial soap to mix the mixture. I would advise anyone to take no chances when it comes to sterility. There was no need to add additional water. Not much steam is given off at 170 degrees, it?s 42 degrees lower than boiling. Joshua

I?m not sure of the correct timing for casing the straw. I am going to post a couple pics under cultivation. I would think that The substrate should be fully colonised. I figure my current tray is 75-85% colonised. I am also curious of the best depth for my substrate layer. I may just pack down the straw and add a second substrate layer of additional straw. Joshua

Before I cased my straw it was that colonized: Read this link to learn about the depth of the substrate and casing layer. http://annonymer.members.easyspace.com/CHAPTER_VIII_THE_CASING_LAYER.htm

Looks like I've still got a couple days left. It appears your brick was nice and sturdy, could you feel the additional biomass? Joshua

> It appears your brick was nice and sturdy Yes. >could you feel the additional biomass? Additional? There is no additional biomass since the straw is converted to mycelium setting free CO2 and heat.

Cool. If I may ask a dumb question? What exactly do use for the cassing? Anything special in that top layer?

In the past 10 parts peat based potting soil 10 parts vermiculite 1 part ground limestone 1 part oyster shells water now 20 parts rehydrated coco coir 1 part ground limestone 1 part oyster shells water Pateurized. I?m still not convinced what?s better though. I tend to go back to the first recipe at the moment, or perhaps a mixture of the both. The straw casing is with the later recipe.

Anno why is it that in all your pics of rye or birdseed you get massive even flushes with large fruits but with this picture there aren?t as many fruits? Does the size of these fruits make up for the lesser amount?

it would be nice to see if you could keep that thing standing up like in the pic of it in your hand... If you could get both sides to fruit you could possibly double your yeald on that....

Man, this tek is the way to go!! Who needs sterlized rye berrys? Based on these pics, this method is quicker!! It kills me when the critics act as if straw is only a cassing material, or that it dosent have enough nutrients etc.. Hey, why not make a video like Rychie Hawk and Ralphster did? (*grin*) - Ok, perhaps thats over kill for a non-vendor. hehe. Any udates comming soon??

These are my most recent pics from 11pm on 1/6. I am planning on casing tonight. Notice the excess humidity on the mycelium. It looks as if the surface of Anno's straw brick was matted by excess moisture being unable to be reabsorbed due to full colonisation. I am very hopeful of this procedure. This is my first try with this tek. I will keep posting updates. I go back to school tomorrow, I will be busier and may only be able to update every 2-3 days. I will post MPEG movies if someone will tell me how. Joshua

I will try rye berries soon. The berries provide more of a dense substrate than hay and may allow fruiting to proceed for longer periods of time. Don't let the mycelium fool you. It is truely the nutrients and the density of nutrients that give the mushies their quality. IMO, of course. Joshua
