    #507639 - 01/02/02 12:06 PM (23 years, 5 months ago)

Here is a B+ hay tray. The straw was pasteurized on 12/30 and inoculated w/ 3/4 pt B+ on PF BRF cake blended in a blender.

nice! maybe its just that B+ is slower than KS but my KS straw casing looks a little bigger than that but it was fully brick-like colonized in 4 or 5 days and was pulling away from the sides before i cased it. like i said it also was a little bigger but i used about 2 1/2 pints of cakes. straw is rocking ass the way i see it. very; VERY easy.

It is straw. What?s the difference? Is it that hay has grain mixed in? This straw does have a bit of grain heads mixed in. I think I liked the sound of hay tray. I couldn?t think of anything catchy to go with straw.

Can you tell me what conditions the straw was colonised under. I have my straw kept with a layer of plastic wrap over it at about 85 deg C. I think also that I used a small ratio of spawn to straw. Have you any fruits yet?

I will be trying to post updates daily.

>It is straw. What?s the difference?
Hay is dried grass.
Straw are the stalks from grain plants, usually wheat.

So how did you pasterize the straw? Did you soak for 24 hours then cook at 160 for an hour?

I cut the straw w/ scissors into 2-3 inch pieces. Placed the straw in a collander and ran hot water over it while mixing it for 5 minutes. Then I placed the straw in a pillow case in a large pot. I placed a heavy plate over the straw to keep it submerged. I pasteurized for 1 hr @ 170 Deg C. Afterpasteurizing it I squeezed all excess water out and placed into clean collander to drain and cool. Once the straw was cool I blended 1.5 cakes in a blender and mixed it into the straw.

Keep in mind that this is my first attempt. My methods are far from perfect.

Well it all looks FINE from here. I find it intersting how nobody agrees on a standard for pasterizing straw. Some say NOT to use a PC... Some say that you have to SOAK for 24 hours etc..

Excatly how can you tell the tempature? I?m guessing your useing a cooking thermonitor... But dont you have to take the lid off of it to check it? Is there anyway of safely guessing the temp without haveing to buy a cooking thermonitor? Like maybe a high setting? Also how much H20 are you useing when you cook it?

- BTW: Regarding your cammera- The battery eater- Get an alkaline recharger, there only like $10.00 @ Radio Shack. (Charges four AA?s)

I modified this post. Originaly my blunder stated PCing, I in fact only pasteurized in an open pot.

I submerged the straw and used a cooking thermo. I bet you could find one at Goodwill for cheap.
