what to do when a process hangs?
    #5074602 - 12/17/05 08:43 AM (18 years, 5 months ago)

I am currently building gentoo on a spare partition from my existing debian installation.

I ran the command
#emerge pciutils

it when though a little way and then just got stuck.
here is the last out put from where it hung.

>>> md5 files ;-) pciutils-2.2.0-r1.ebuild
>>> md5 files ;-) pciutils-2.1.11-r5.ebuild
>>> md5 files ;-) files/digest-pciutils-2.2.0-r1
>>> md5 files ;-) files/pcimodules-pciutils-2.1.11.diff
>>> md5 files ;-) files/pciutils-2.1.11-bsd.patch
>>> md5 files ;-) files/pciutils-2.1.11-sysfs.patch
>>> md5 files ;-) files/pciutils-2.1.11-malloc.patch
>>> md5 files ;-) files/pcimodules-pciutils-2.2.0.patch
>>> md5 files ;-) files/digest-pciutils-2.1.11-r5
>>> md5 files ;-) files/2.1.11-scan.patch
>>> md5 files ;-) files/pciutils-2.2.0-shared-lib.patch
>>> md5 files ;-) files/pciutils-2.1.11-gentoo-paths.patch
>>> md5 src_uri ;-) pciutils-2.2.0.tar.gz
>>> md5 src_uri ;-) pci.ids-20051015.bz2
>>> Unpacking source...
>>> Unpacking pciutils-2.2.0.tar.gz to /var/tmp/portage/pciutils-2.2.0-r1/work
>>> Unpacking pci.ids-20051015.bz2 to /var/tmp/portage/pciutils-2.2.0-r1/work
* Applying pcimodules-pciutils-2.2.0.patch ... [ ok ]
* Applying pciutils-2.2.0-shared-lib.patch ... [ ok ]
* Applying pciutils-2.1.11-malloc.patch ... [ ok ]
* Updating pci.ids from the web ...

It has been sitting there for about 20 minutes so far.
I just went ahead and chrooted another eterm into gentoo so i could continue on with the installation since pciutils isn't necesary.

My question is,
What do i do if this processs doesn't finish?
Im afraid to ctrl-c because i don't want to break anything.

hahahaha
just as i finished typing the above, it finished.
I still would like to know what I should do in such a situation though.

thanks guys

i always just ctrl-c and then re-run it... haven't run into any problems to date, although i can understand why you'd be wary...

For that high level advice check the Gentoo forums. It is full of Linux Gods.

Yeah ctrl+c and emerge again. All packages installed up to that point will be fine, it'll pick up where it left off.
