agar, how the hell you stir that shit at 8-9 hundred RPM's?

There is a difference between reading and READING.

I'm no cake guy. But this I know.

The myc in LC's consists of tiny thread like filaments, smaller than spider web thread material. As such, when injected the strands tend to cling/stick to the very first thing they touch inside a jar.

That is one reason why I use stir bars & a stir plate to stir LC's.
Besides aeration, a stir bar spinning at 8 or 9 hundred RPM effectively cuts/shreds those thread like myc filaments into pieces about 100th of an inch long, or even shorter.

After each stirring the original myc mass has been divided into literally millions more individual filaments. As each new filament starts growing again, the myc mass in solution increases exponentially. That is one reason why my LC jars thickly colonize inside just a few days.

The second reason I stir the jars for 15 or 20 minutes, before using the content for inoculate. Is so the myc is once more shredded into as many tiny individual pieces, as possible. Because more individual pieces create more points of contact, growth & overall faster colonization.

Tiny myc pieces in solution also travel further, faster & are not as prone to sticking to the WBS content in the upper half of a jar, or bag.

Can you see the potential problem involved with PF style cake jars with a verm barrier on top that are inoculated with an average LC solution.

>>>>Do you use your stir plate like once a day or so...for a few moments at a time...on each LC.. <<<<

Once a day, for 5 or 6 minutes each is adequate. If you want to speed things up, twice a day morning & evening for 5 or 6 minutes each. 3 or 4 times a day would probably increase the mycelium mass even faster. If I recall correctly, BlueHelix left his on constantly & had almost gravy thick culture solution in 4 days from spore inoculation.

No need for the heat function. Many stir plates are multi-function, with a switch so you can heat & stir at once, or just stir, or just heat.

Mine just has an off/on switch, stirs period & you can adjust the rpm speed with a dial knob. I bought it off eBay for $35 shipping included.

I have seen both types go over ebay from about $15 + S/H to around $200 for near new fancy digital controlled multifunction ones, with timers.
