Strong acid experiment
    #5071979 - 12/16/05 03:16 PM (18 years, 3 months ago)

I can't seem to find the answer on Google, so here goes:

Can you etch off a quarter or penny with muriatic acid? I'm curious if you can take the silver coating off a quarter.

But the question is, can you put this in a mason jar, or will the muriatic acid etch the glass? In other words, are you restricted to using HDPE containers?

Not sure on the properties of the quarter, but i wouldn't be all that concerned over HCl etching glass.....bases seem much more prone to do it.
Plus Chlorine is weak shit as an etchant.
Might wanna put it in a plastic bowl just in case.

I'd be more concerned with fume containment.

there is only 1 way to find out. muriatic acid, a mason jar, and a quarter aren't that expensive. give it a try!

....out of curiousity, why are you doing this?
