Redemption
    #5066679 - 12/15/05 11:05 AM (18 years, 1 month ago)

One of the major factors that the Stanley Tookie Williams case gained much attention was due to him being personified as redemption. From what I understand he apologized for killing Albert Owens in 1979 (although denied any role in the other 3 murders), began to denounce gang life through children's book, and, according to him, found God.

One of the last statements Tookie made hours before his execution on Tuesday was, ?[M]y lack of fear of this barbaric methodology of death, I rely upon my faith. It has nothing to do with machismo, with manhood, or with some pseudo former gang street code. This is pure faith, and predicated on my redemption. So, therefore, I just stand strong and continue to tell you, your audience and the world that I am innocent and, yes, I have been a wretched person, but I have redeemed myself. And I say to you and all those who can listen and will listen that redemption is tailor-made for the wretched, and that's what I used to be?.That's what I would like the world to remember me. That's how I would like my legacy to be remembered as: a redemptive transition, something that I believe is not exclusive just for the so-called sanctimonious, the elitists. And it doesn't -- is not predicated on color or race or social stratum or one's religious background. It's accessible for everybody. That's the beauty about it. And whether others choose to believe that I have redeemed myself or not, I worry not, because I know and God knows, and you can believe that all of the youths that I continue to help, they know, too. So with that, I am grateful?.I say to you and everyone else, God bless. So take care.?

I don't wish for this thread to turn into a debate about Tookie or the death penalty, but rather to broach the phenomena of the "scumbag to saved" transition that we often see, styled as Redemption - both in real life and in fiction, as was the case with various characters in the Green Mile.

Sure, there are many cases where criminals appear to redeem themselves in ways that are obviously insincere - however, these situations are almost always exclusive to those who have a chance of being paroled. But what about those, who have committed the most heinous crimes against others and then later in life realize the blatantly uncompassionate ways of their actions?

Are some people, no matter how sincere their repentance appears, simply unredeemable?

I wonder sometimes if they are just tyrying to persuade us that they've changed so they can return to their evil ways.

although...i hope and have faith...that he really is redemed (or that people can be redemed)
