The lack of ability to absorb water... When you water a casing with overlay, instead of being absorbed into the casing it forms little pools of moisture on the top. Also the mycelium will cover all or most of the surface area, and appear to be "matted", like a dead layer of skin on top.

if this happens what can you do about it? i think one of willie grace's experiments may be doing that and he is a bit worried about it.

Sterilize a fork and scratch the surface as though you were plowing(or is it tilling?) a field. I would scratch about 1/3 down into my top casing layer. Peace

Well you need to figure out what caused it... Overlay is usually caused by a build-up of Co2...so you should try increasing the air exchange..if that is not the case, then it could be due to too low humidity, or a dry casing layer. In either event, figure out what caused it and fix it. Deep scratching might help.

Yes. Don't let the casing layer dry out Deep scratch it and then give it a spraying

Or ya could deep scratch and add another 1/4-1/2 inch of moist casing material on top and keep it moist this time, it will take a little extra time to recolonize the casing layer but will work regardless. Peace
