it took me a bit less than a year to fill my last 200gb external drive with music. i bet this one will take me a bit longer. but it's nice to get this (a christmas present to myself - my last one reached 99.5% about 2 weeks ago) and be able to download/copy music again
oh, and i got this harddrive

have you had bad experience with them?
i've never had one, but didn't hear anything bad about them...
mind you i'll probably format it ext3 and run it solely on linux (well, 2 windows computers will be connected to it via samba, but with no write permissions)

Ewe Maxtor
I've had a lot of experience with smaller size maxtors and a good couple didn't last long.
They're loud and clanky too
Get a nice Seagate Barracuda

Both drives in my old computer are maxtor's, 8+ years old. Both work just fine, altho one requires some attention every now and again, altho i'm pretty sure that's solely the OS at fault.

I have worked with a lot of hard drives over the last twenty years. I have seen drives from every manufacturer die at some point. The ones I have seen the most of die are Fujitsu drives. The ones I have seen the least of die are probably IBM drives. In my experience, both Maxtor and Seagate are in the middle somewhere. I have seen a lot of both die, but there are a lot of both out there. Avoid Fujitsu drives and back up your data...

would you recommend reiserFS? from what i've read, they have switched development to reiser4, which doesn't work with the linux kernel yet. i've pretty much used ext3 and fat32 (vfat) on all my drives (ext3 on the drives that will only be locally plugged, fat32 on removable drives so i could technically plug them into a m$ machine) - however now i've got a permanent linux workstation setup at my house (before i only had my laptop, and my two roomates windows machines), so i could have the drive formatted ext3 and then samba mount it from windows. what are the benefits (that you've noticed) with reiserFS?

maxtor drives come with a 1 year warranty
seagate barracudas come with a 5 year warranty
I take that as a sign that seagate have more faith in their own products
plus, the only drives I have ever had die within the warranty period are maxtors
obviously, there will be thousands of maxtor drives that are just fine, but if a drive dies three years after I buy it, I like to be able to get a replacement.
