Replacing a CD Writer

I have an older HP desktop computer that I can't afford to replace right now. It's a HP Pavilion XL44 800mhz running Windows ME I have about 1 GB space on HD left. My CD writer won't read or write disks anymore, it powers up, lights flash, etc. I've tried everything I can think of and I'm convinced the drive is bad. The drive is the one that came with the computer new (Mitsumi CR-4804TE). NOW the question!! Can I replace this drive with a DVD burner? Can I PLAY dvds on a dvd burner? Any reccomendations for a replacement drive? ($100.00<) Thanks for the help!

You can replace it with a dvd burner, yes you can play dvd's on the burner.
Look up a lite on burner on www.newegg.com shoudl come to 40 or 45 + shipping.
To replace it it involves 2 to 4 screws and 2 cables. If its an hp case it might take you a bit to get the case apart. If yo ucan post a picture i'll gladly post a guide how to take it apart.

Thanks for the info, I've had the tower apart before. I'll give that site a look. Thanks again.

Hmmm.. According to that site, These drives are NOT compatiable with the info I gave in my original message. CPU is too slow.

Possibly it's just too slow for max burn/read speed. Mine cd burner said that it wouldn't work on my dinosaur, but that's how i got the OS that i'm dealing with now burnt.

If you're in a rush Walmart has some dual layer DVD burners for about $60.
If you're interested in "backing up existing DVD's that you own" dual-layer is really the only way to go IMO.
