I'm pretty much never happy. lol how lame is that? Anyway, I'm happy when my wife is around but she is gone to work most of the day.
Money doesn't make me happy. Drugs (pot) work for a few hours/days but I'd rather not be a pot head 24/7 as I need to think clearly to work.
The doc tried a few pills for me. They all make me whacky and I dislike them enough not to take them.
Any suggestions? Also I have a bad social anxiety disorder. ;(

why do people think that happiness is the normal state? as if everyone is just supposed to be happy as a default. You are legally and spiritually entitled to only the "pursuit of happiness", and that is only something you can do. No one is going to hand you happiness on a platter. Only you know what it takes for you to be happy, and only you can pursue those things.
Remember when you were a kid, and happiness was abound? you could be crying and pouting one second and be skipping along the next. You lived in the moment because you didnt have forsight for the future, and really had no past to dwell on, as well as you were absorbed in learning and experiencing the world around you. Once we get a little older and "mature" we become bored and disinterested in the world and start to focus on ourselves and our misery.

you could be affected by seasonal effective disorder, lots of people get depressed in the winter, is this an on going problem??
either way i would have to disagree that medication is the way to go. usually a change in life or life style helps.

I keep wanting to move the netherlands or BC. A place where I can run my online stuff and never worry about the law busting me for pot use.
To move for a drug is lame though. I'm either moving to BC or boulder CO. in about 5 months. So I suppose it's win/win.

Your prob right I just need to get the fuck out of Utah. I have lived here for 6 or 7 years now...

before i say anything, let me add that psilocyberin was right on with his points ..
from personal experience, there are a few general causes for falling into depression:
-not having a job, or a project to commit to getting 'lost' in every day
-committing to things you are unable to follow through with
-not committing to anything in the first place
-letting yourself get lazy about things which matter to you
-not earning/spending your own money (being reliant on a significant other/parent/etc.)
-having no goals day to day ... or having repetitive but pointless goals which fill a need to do SOMETHING everyday in an addictive fashion but don't lead anywhere
-not letting yourself get so caught up in something new that suddenly there is a risk involved, and thus, a possible reward ... like trying a new hobby, etc. ...
-not learning something new everyday! it doesn't matter what you learned or whether you even remember it the next day, but what matters is that it did teach you something, for the moment ... learning how to cook something new, hearing a random fact which strikes you, listening to a new band, etc. ...
i find that sitting at home with no priorities can make me drop into depression within a DAY ... going out and doing things can get me out of depression ALSO within a day ...
one big thing with depression is the more depressed you are, the more wrapped up in your problems you are ... and with that in mind, the more you are wrapped up in yourself, the less focus you can put on the outside world, something which can teach you something new every moment ... but only with open ears ...
i struggle with depression all the time, but i've found through repeatedly pinpointing specific reasons for my depression that it gets milder and more transient with the more effort i put into not feeling that way every day ...

Heeey nice list. Good points! A lot of those aren't my problems but I think the "No goals per day" is prob the major problem I have.

well... I can suggest what worked for me. Quit all pills, including medication. Take your car and a chunk of cash and just drive as far as you can. Don't make reservations, don't make plans... don't think about where you will stay or how you will get back. Just drop everything and go. When you get to where you decide is the turn-around point, find a motel or safe place or ANYWHERE and eat some mushrooms. Explore your new surroundings and enjoy your new-found (chemical) sobriety.
Drive home the next day tired, hungry and emotional. Wake up the next day and realize life is too beautiful to waste being mundane and ordinary.
...that was a large pile of crap. Don't know if any of it makes sense... but hell, sometimes I think people just need to forget about responsibility for a short amount of time and just say "fuck everything" and go somewhere new.

i'm glad you agree with the list, those are the main things that made me lose the groove in life, the flow that keeps things in order and well off ...

its all about being fufilled with your life. some people can sit on the couch all day and be fufilled by that, others have a bit more of an internal drive, and ambitions.
i suppose you could call it being disapointed in yourself, un satisfied with the person you are beacuse you know that you can be so much more.
so either change your views, or your actions.

I think I may be a bit mentaly ill as it is. I think the fact that I only work 2 hours a day and the rest of the day I drool all over shroomery irc ooor drug up ooooor drink ooooor watch TV could be a part of that.
I think I'll put togather my resume' tommorow and put it on monster. I could easily have another job.

That is so true. There is a reciprocal link between one's thoughts feelings and behavior. They are all related. Someone who is depressed tends to focus on the negative. The more negative your thinking, the more depressed you feel. The more depressed you feel, the less likely you are to engage in activities and a vicious cycle is created. I know for me, I need to delete "I should have..." from my vocabulary. It is good to learn from my mistakes but focusing on what I "should have done" is not healthy either. I call it the should have, would have, could have syndrome
There are some people who have clinical depression (very different from just feeling sad) which can be very serious (I was just reading the suicide link above-great thread). For some, meds are helpful. For others, therapy is helpful. And for others, both are helpful. And for some, unfortunately, no treatment has been found to be helpful. There is no quick fix or magic pill that will solve all
