Mountaineering Equipment
    #4875374 - 10/31/05 01:53 PM (18 years, 3 months ago)

I'm planning on summiting Mt. Shasta in March, but I need some mountaineering equipment before hand. I've found some 10-point crampons and a pair of ice axes, but I still need boots. I talked to my friend and he recommended 3/4 length steel shank mountaineering boots, looking around those guys are uber expensive. I was wondering if any of you guys know of a good place to get crampon compatible boots for a decent price (ie, other than REI). I might have to end up selling my snowboard boots for mountaineering boots, but i'm trying to avoid it (wouldn't be that bad seeing how i haven't used my board in years). Also, any suggestions on what i should look for as far as fit, quality brands or features would be great. thanks

Mountain Gear is a good place to start they got some nice boots in the clearence stuff....

I have a pair of Koflac Acrtis and had to replace the inner liner after one trip up Mt Rainer and a few waterfall climbs. These boots size up funny, i wear a US 10 but a US 11 in the Koflac boots. I'm sure they'll last the rest of my life but if i had to buy another pair i'd go for the Lowa boots!

if your not ice climbing...i really like kahtoola crampons and they will strap on almost any shoe. http://www.kahtoola.com/ . im not sure how hardcore mt shasta is to summit. but if you have decent boots already that you can keep warm in, possibly all you might need right now is just some crampons. and heavy duty socks, depends on your current hiking boot situation. kahtoola are very light and are not razor sharp, so they are easier on your gear when packed.
 dont forget the warm socks.

when u say "pair" of ice axes that almost tells me you may be ice climbing . if not: when u pick an non ice climbing axe look for one that is comfortable to hold by the head ie

http://www.bdel.com/gear/raven_pro.php

notice how the handle is rounded and indented near the head compared to say

http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detai...D=1131587558844

which doesnt. also depends on personal preference. but the 1st example is much easier to hike with in your hand.

my current mountaineering boots are

http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detai...D=1131587395446

which are kinda pricey but i love them and feel invincible in them. they are very stiff. annie on the other hand doesnt like real stiff boots. so wear them around alot before hand, even in the store. go try them on somewhere even if you do end up buying them online.

if you will be ice climbing then disregard this post.

also i can wear kahtoola crampons on almost any shoe, something to think about if you do summer and winter summits.

advice to make such a trip more enjoyable and/or safe
  1. wear your new boots alot before you go one the mountain ie                break them in
  2. you MUST go practice with your ice axe before you go. its a safety device that requires skill and it almost worthless if you have never used it (you need a wrist strap for it too). so go practice falling down and catching yourself in a safe area with a safe runout

your trip sounds awesome, are you going with someone with experience on shasta?

ice axe != pair.. lol my bad, i wont be doing ice climbing on shasta i think i'll have to work my way up to that sport. I'm going with a friend who has gone up Shasta a few times. The route we're likely to take isn't too challenging as far as mountaineering goes from what I'm told. Thanks for the great tips, oDin, safety and otherwise!
