ok, i know this is probably retarded, but is steeping just cooking shit in water? If so, how much water should you use for different materials? I couldn't find any details on the subject.

I feel your pain. People around here use it interchangably between the meaning above and simmering. Steeping usually does mean that boiling water is poured onto whatever you want to steep. If your refering to Birdseed however, I believe that you need to simmer it on a very low temp for the required time.

Im asking how much water should I use with certain grains, and should I strain the graisn after they've been steeped, or just leave the water that I used to steep them in the substrate?

Keep the water level over the top of the grain while cooking at a low boil. Drain WELL using a strainer or colander.

I can only speak of birdseed. Depending on the brand but might as well do it to everything, you should rinse the HELL out of it. I mean HELL. At least on Penningtons they coat it with some kind of vitamin shit and if you don't wash that off then you will have the GOO. You don't want the GOO. Somone I know but am not conjugal with is currently experimenting with 2:1 birdseed to verm. The results are stupendous. Very fast colonizing and not one jar of GOO.
