Building 'cheap' PC for buddy...

I havent kept up on PC parts/prices lately. Especialy with all these new sets of CPUs, with different pin numbers, and the intel D/E/fuckwhat?
I think im gonna stick to AMD...
Anyway, quick question, these 'shuttles' i've been seeing... are they worth the price? Most have integrated VGA, which is good considering this will be an 'internet' PC.
Also, any suggestions or tips to make a good (upgradeable?) cheap PC? I have about $400 CAD to work with.
anything specific to stay away from?

I haven't seen shuttles that come with both cpu and ram.
This isn't too bad for $310
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1548338&CatId=1279
You would need to buy a video card and cd rom still, but since he wont be playing games you can get a cheap $40 video card and cd burner for about $30.

now i know its lame to buy a premade computer but it seems the cheapest option...
i know dell sells some complete systems w/ flat screen monitors for under $500... i heard you can get one for around $300.. worth looking into, not as fun though

Gonna smack all my replies in one post. ;P
Krishna: Ok, think monkey with keyboard. Thats my buddy and his PC skills. Like hell im gonna put anything fancy even i dont understand too much on there, i'll be there 'fixing' the thing every 2 days!
gen and belly: i usualy checkout the cheapest prices on www.icct.ca and www.pcvillagecanada.com They both have outlets close to me in the city. NCIX is pretty cool too.
Jared: thanks for the build. I'm probly gonna use that layout and get the parts from one of the sources above, that way i save on shipping.
matty: to tell u the truth, a lot of that $$ goes into marketing and such, not the PC. You get a much better deal from a small chinese shop for $300 than a dell for the same price usualy. Dell has some nice tech support tho, sum ppl need that. I have a huge skinhead bouncer at work that gives them a call all the time.
Thanks all!

Oh btw, i was looking over the sites, and im wondering if instead of the ASRock K8UPGRADE-VM800 motherboard, i should get the ASUS K8S-MX instead.
The ASUS has
"Integrated Mirage2 graphics in SiS760GX chipset supports DirectX8.1 upto 128MB shared video memory"
while the ASRock:
-Intergrated UniChrome Pro 3D Graphics in VIA K8M800 chipset - Shared Memory Max. 64MB (with the pre-condition of at least 256MB system memory)
Now i dont know if that means i can up the 'max' video memory if i have more ram or not... but whatever, im just curious which is better... the the POS 'unichrome' or the POS 'SiS760GX'
Here's a link to both mobos: http://usa.asus.com/products4.aspx?modelmenu=2&model=377&l1=3&l2=14&l3=149

The asus board would be better I think, they have always made quality products. Plus it has room for expansion in its graphics area, PCI-E and AGP slots are there if your buddy decides he wants to play a game that needs a decent video card.
Go with the Asus.

If you have an old video card laying around.. pci, agp, whatever, get the ASROCK S939 SATA2, its about 85$, and is a terrific motherboard.. youd need to couple it with a different processor, I personnally suggest the 160$ s939 a64 3000+.. it puts the cost of the system up a bit, but its an investment in future upgradability.
It seems like Asus is resting on its laurels these days. MSI has overtaken them for quality, and DFI puts them both to shame... not that asus makes bad boards, but I haven't been at all impressed with the last few asus boards I've used.
DFI =

The asus board is the same price plus it has the option of a pci-e card too....and asus is definatly a better mobo manufactorer than asrock

I am in the process of building my first computer as well.
I just bought my CPU, motherboard, case, Power supply, RAM on tigerdirect.com
I think I went a little overboard, but, I had the money so I said screw it. I really want to play Doom3
THere were several options for getting a great computer for under $400. I bought all this for $470 (shipping included):
Intel P4 64-bit, 3.0 ghz, 2MB cache $199 Asus Nvidia chipset MB $120 1 gig Corsair PC4200 DDR2 ram $70
Im using my current vid card, HD and CD/DVD burner though....
I can't wait until it comes in the mail!!!
I've had this POS 400mhz gateway since 1998!!!!!!!!!!

Thats a huge step angry shroom, nice!
Should have gone with AMD though you could have got a much better CPU for the same price AMD 64 3200+, plus AMD is superior in game compared to intel.
But at least you'l have a decent computer for awhile. White kind of video card do you have or plan on getting? Is your motherboard AGP or PCI-E?
This is for everyone whos planning on buying or upgrading their computer. Post in this forum first, theres a few people who have a good grasp on hardware, we can help you get a kick ass system running for cheaper.
