Knoppix trouble/ question

Trying to boot Knoppix on my other windows box. It seems to only load like 1 out of every 10 times I boot it. If it doesn't load it gets stuck at Detecting USB.... and goes nowhere. If it does load it doesn't stall at that part at all and loads right up.
I've tried many different startup options, nothing seems to get it loading every time. PC is Asus mb/ Nforce2 with AMD XP 2100 CPU, 512MB Corsair memory.
Also, since I don't have a linux partition installed on the computer, would it be possible to save Knoppix settings to a 256mb flash stick once I get it working?

I had the same problem with Knoppix so I dumped it for Kanotix about a year ago. USB memory sticks were the problem. Kanotix is much better and it will install to the HDD better as well. Also try Damn Small Linux.

Your problem could be as simple as a bad burn on your cd.
If I were you I'd try reburning the disc first. Or better yet, try Damn Small Linux. www.damnsmalllinux.org It's based on Knoppix, but it's a super tiny version, only 50 megs. Not only can you save your settings to your flash drive with it, but you can actually boot the whole OS off the flash drive if your BIOS supports that.

I was able to load Knoppix on my system, the problem was I was too dumb to know how to use it.
It was knoppix helix, a forensic release, I wanted to investigate myself, but i couldnt do jack.
EDIT: This was on a P4 though.

the same applies to feather linux and so will puppy linux, which iirc, is optimised to reduce wear when booted from usb.

Damn Small is the only one of the three that has actually successfully booted from USB for me. The others read isolinux, then just sit there like they can't find the kernel or something. And Damn Small doesn't come with a driver for my onboard net chip, so actually I've had pretty bad luck with USB distros.
