Linux question
    #5048923 - 12/11/05 04:31 PM (18 years, 5 months ago)

If I get some Linux Distribution CD, can I just remove windows XP, and install Linux from the distribution CD with no OS on my computer?

If your BIOS is set properly (which it probably is), yes.

O.K.. I don't care about any of the data on my computer.. I'm in the middle of a paranoid frenzy, and need a Unix based OS.. What would you recommend doing? How can you check your BIOS on XP? On boot?

As long as your computer is relatively (2002 or newer) new it is already set to boot from CDROM. Just insert the Linux disk and reboot. When the time comes tell it to take the whole disk. If you are paranoid make sure you run a disk securing utility ( http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/download.php ) before losing Windows to overwrite the data enough times that it cannot be recovered. Tell it to erase all unused space 7 times. If you have any private records that are sensitive erase them 7 times. THEN install Linux. Just nuking your Windows disk once with a linux install leaves the old data recoverable by government labs.

Huehuecoyotl, unfortuanatly computer forensics can still get the data off if you do that, thier is a guide somewhere about writing confilincting data 18 times, but it says that because of redundancy information can still be removed. If your worried about stuff on your hard disk you will have to physicly destroy it.
