Grain -> Pasteurized Grain?
    #5048429 - 12/11/05 02:15 PM (18 years, 2 months ago)

This isnt quite advanced, but thought it would get a better response here. Given the relatively low cost of birdseed and difficutly getting composted substrates (for most people), does anyone use birdseed as their bulk substrate:
Liquid innoculant -> Sterile birdseed -> Pasterized (bulk) birdseed

It makes sense to me, but I wanted to know if you experts had any comments.

Thanks in advance -MM

i dont think pasturized WBS will work, you have to PC it to sterilize it. but Agar did up a TEC (dont know the link) that he used ground up WBS and sterilized it in the microwave and it worked. if i remember right that pasturizing whole WBS will not kill off the endo spores that are in the WBS thats why you have to PC or grind up into powder and microwave to kill them all.

Pasteurization (alone) will not suffice for whole grains. They require sterilization. Think PC, minimum 60 minutes at 15 psi. 90 minutes is preferable. Larger loads require even longer times.
