Chinese police shoot demonstrators
The Scottsman ^ | Sat 10 Dec 2005 | Unknown

Hundreds of riot police armed with guns and shields surrounded and sealed off a southern Chinese village where authorities shot dead as many as 10 demonstrators this week.

Residents in Dongzhou, a village in Guangdong province, said thousands of people had gathered to protest over what they said was inadequate compensation being offered for land to be used in the construction of a wind power plant.

Police fired into the crowd and killed a handful of people, mostly men, villagers reached by telephone said. Accounts of the death toll ranged from two and 10, with many missing.

State media have made no mention of the incident and both provincial and local governments have repeatedly refused to comment.

All the villagers said they were nervous and scared and most did not want to be identified for fear of retribution. One man said the situation was still "tumultuous."

A 14-year-old girl said a local official visited the village on Friday and called the shootings "a misunderstanding."

"He said (he) hoped it wouldn't become a big issue," the girl said over the telephone. "This is not a misunderstanding. I am afraid. I haven't been to school in days."

She added, "Come save us."

Another villager said there were at least 10 deaths.

"The riot police are gathered outside our village. We've been surrounded," she said, sobbing. "Most of the police are armed. We dare not to go out of our homes."

Perhaps you mean totalitarianism? Or violence in general?

I don't understand why this has anything to do with communism. Maoism perhaps.

Marxism and Leninism is by no means the same thing, or even close to the same thing, as Communism, in the same way the Kim Jong Il's government has little to do with Communism, or the the Democratic Republic of Congo has little to do with democracy.

You should examine a government's policies to determine what political model it best adheres to, not how it describes itself.

Couldn't help to think on how this reminds me of the recent eminent domain cases and rulings that have been taking place here in the U.S. But I least we have guns to return fire with.

And at least a wind power plant could be construed to be for "public use" as opposed to condo's that only the wealthy can ever afford.

Although communism is inherently flawed as a means of organizing economic activity, China is about as close to being communist as the U.S. is to being a laissez-faire democracy.

Didn't Marx write The Communist Manifesto?

I thought the idea was to establish a socialist society with the ultimate goal of communism?

I disagree. There is a difference between the ideology that a government aspires to and the actual political model that it currently uses. Like the US republic aspiring to the ideology of democracy. I think it would be perfectly valid to cite the US when criticizing democracy even though it is a republic. In fact, this is done all the time. These distinctions should already be known by an educated reader.

Yes, but Marx didn't invent the idea of communism. He just laid out a plan for reaching a communist society through socialism. In fact, he referred to the way hunter-gatherers lived as "primitive communism," which I think is an apt description. There is some indication that early Christian communities lived a communist lifestyle. Then, there were anarcho-communists like Michael Bakunin or Peter Kropotkin.
