BRF Outside !
    #504189 - 12/29/01 04:18 PM (21 years, 8 months ago)

I have been thinking for a while about growing outside in a valley near me where shrooms grow naturally .

I came up with this theoretical technique : Use a spade to carefully take the top layer of the ground off so you have grass roots and all intact - then dig up the next few inches of ground and throw it away then add wetted vermiculite to the bottom then broken up 100% colonized BRF substrate then place the top layer(of grass mat) back on .
Then cover with a plastic container until the mycelium recovers and starts to colonize the grassy area - then remove the plastic and leave the shrooms to grow .

In the wild the grass keeps the air just above the ground humid so the shrooms should grow fine like this .

I will initiate testing soon .

Well on letting the jars cool to outside's temperature the mycelium completely stopped growing so I will be postponing the testing of this procedure until summer .

Which specie do you plan on growing? Your methods should vary depending on this.

Cambodians definitely need warmer temps. You might try an outdoor bed at the beginning of summer. Make sure your moisture level is adequate. Try reading "Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms" by Paul Stamets. I'm sure you will gain much insight.

Other people have mentioned choping up several jars of PF style jars and throwing in there back yards. It would seem to me that if one could count on perfect weather for a week or more that throwing a bunch of crumbled up PF style myceium on a pile of dead leaves, or compost could work. A lot would depend on the weather.
