I think the reason Chapman shot Lennon was because he was a nobody his whole life, and wanted to make history in the world.
Not to mention he was a huge psycho idiot. I dont think he even had anything against Lennon personally. He just wanted to be known.

I watched something on TV about this..biography something...hollywood story blah blah..rather.
