need emergency help with poly-fil filter

I want to put a poly-fil filter on top of my 1 pint wide mouths. How big of a hole should I drill? How tight should I stuff the poly-fil? Last time I stuffed it as tight as humanly possible and it didn't work out for me.

Pencil sized hole. Stuff it tight or it won't work.
