what is this outdoors

i found this weird fugus/ lichen growing on top of my compost heap were i dump my old casings.
just though it looks strange. it seems to be growing on strange places like if fell from the tree. dont know if you can see from the pics but its even on a feather and on top of a leaf of dosent look to be connected to the ground.
does that make sence?
just wondering if any one has seen this of knows what it is. ?

That appears to be the fruiting structure of a slime mold. A very strange beast that moves in a cohesive mass like an amoeba. An oddball of the fungal world.

ya, its perrty strange,now it has all turned a dull grayish blue.
if it is touched it breaks open and black spores come out.
i almost what to try to innc. some jars with it , just to see.
but what substrate could i use. ?

If you're that desperate you could always take samples from the ground it's growing on and use that as your substrate!
