My First Large Casing (don't want to lose this!)
    #5027184 - 12/07/05 02:34 AM (18 years, 4 months ago)

Here is my first large-sized casing. I took it out of incubation a little less than a week ago. I think it is looking pretty good, and some pins are just starting to come up. I'll update it as it goes along. But I took this one picture and noticed some green! What should I do about that? It's very small right now, but it looks like contam to me. What would be the best way to fix it before it takes over? I heard something about salt and something about h2o2, but I don't remember exactly. Anyway, without further ado...

Casing

A little greenish blotch. Also that's not a hair, it was in the peat moss

First pins

Thanks. I know there's some overlay, but overall it looks like there will be a decent pinset.

I just realized, since I got some mist directly on the casing today, the water may have caused bluing, since it's a bluish-green color.. maybe more blue than green depending on how the photo color turned out. I remember spraying a cake and having it saturate blue. When I look close up all over the casing there's some slight blue all over, which makes me think it might be bluing. I hope so!

Edit to add.....MAKE UP your mind. Green mold, or not.

If so, follow the directions below.
~~~~~~~~~~
Quickly,
Bury the green spot with a small pile of salt.
Then, spray some mild peroxide solution on the pile.
That will not save the day.
But, may stall that nasty, until you gets some fruits off the tray.
Ok, thanks for the info. Unfortunately I don't have any peroxide, only salt. Lol, I'm sorry, I just sent you a PM, because I wasn't sure if you read my above post, and then just realized you did. Alas, such is a forum! Anyway, I'm not sure that there's anything I could do then, if peroxide is the answer. I could possibly get some tomorrow, or wait it out and spend some time in a church confessing my sins and praying it is just blueing.
I read about this AFTER I already poured salt on the blue-green area, unfortunately. If the area is wet and it's bruising, will it still not leave anything on the q-tip?
that means that there is too much mycelium growing on the casing, it is even growing mycelium on top of mycelium.
look in the sub forums under casings, theres allot of pics for comparison.
Update:
Well that assumed green-blue contam has spread slightly past the salt I poured on it. I still dont know what it is. But I really don't want to lose this casing, it looks like otherwise it would turn out great. I'm not sure what to do.
Its the mean green. All you can do is keep salting and peroxide it. Maybe if you took a q tip with bleach on it and bleached the green?
Yes, but he would risk spreading all kinds of mold spores all over the casing. Its best to try and kill it first.
Trouble with green is that it usually starts from the middle and works it's way out.
You could be fighting a lost cause.
Im not even possitive it is green mold. It could be bruising. When he put on the pile of salt it bruised more mycelium and made it look like its growing???
Just a thought.
Match, how did you prepare your casing mix? Did you sterilize the mix? When you moistened the mix, did you add any peroxide?
i think it is just bruising, if i were you, i would wait until the first flush finishes, then pull the casing out of the case and check it out, it should hold together strongly, and if it ends up being contam, just throw out the case and fruits....if it is just bruising, it will not go all the through the case.
Rite now, go take a Q-tip or tissue paper and wipe a little peice of the blue/green. See if you can get the green mold spores to stick to the q tip or paper, if it sticks it is mold, if no green sticks its not mold.
stop confusing the poor man...
Keep the casing for a bit
if it is green mold then it is a lost cause anyways.. and you will just have to chuck it when it is def. noticable that it is green
If it is not then it will be fine and you dont need to worry
let it run its course
Well that pic is actually from yesterday, before I put more salt over the area. I completely covered it, so I can't access the area with a qtip right now, but I can wait to see if it spreads some more, and swab it then.
The odd thing is that in person it is hard to see the blue-green, but much easier in the photograph, so it's hard to see what area to cover or to swab.
Since my casing is much wetter than average, would it be possible that when swabbing the area, that because of the wetness, it would stain the q-tip, whether it was mold or bruising, because the wet mycelium might come off and soak onto the q-tip?--or would it only stain if it's mold regardless?
