What is growing on my Pedro?
    #502505 - 12/27/01 05:43 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

I have several San Pedros between 2 and 3 feet tall. They are inside now, cause it is cold as shit here in Philly. On one of my Pedros, I have these strange things growing out of one side. They are very light green, almost white. They are all about 1/8" thick and 1/2 " long, they are slightly flexible, but mostly pretty stiff, and they are all on the same side and within 1" of each other. I have had pups grow on my cactus before, and I know what they look like when they first appear, these things look nothing like pups. They are also growing slightly downward, I have no idea why. I first noticed them about a week ago, but I don't know how long they've been there. Any ideas what these growths are?

i have shit growing out of mine but i think it was roots trying to start cause i dont have them in soil or even getting waterd. i used to cut them off but they turn into black scabs after. they stopped showing up a few months ago but there are still traces of the old ones.

I have that on my pedros too, it is just scar tissue. What I have on mine is a definite growth sticking out of the plant about 1/2". It is not sunburn, scar tissue, or fungus, at least I'm pretty sure it's not.

It's probably a root, tho' your description of it as "light green, almost white" is a bit mystifying...never seen it happen on a pachanoi, but bridgesii seem quite prone to developing roots from the stem...no idea why.

You are right, it is mystifying, but I'm pretty sure it isn't root growth, becuse whatever is growing, is growing 18" above the sand. I wish I could post some pics for you guys, because I just can't figure out what these growths are.

I've seen Tr. bridgesii put out roots that far above the soil, but they're short, ugly, brown tuber-type things...

I'm sure you've already thought of this, but is it possible your cactus is about to flower?

I never even considered the idea of flowering. It is a good thought, but it is the middle of the winter here, and all of my cacti are pretty dormant, except for the one that has the shit growing out of the side of it.
