Splitting AVI files

I have the usual problem of a too large of an AVI file to burn to SVCD. I have done some searching for some decent, freeware programs to do the job, but nothing really cropped up.
I have tryed using Nero express but with not much success, is it usual to take 7 hours to export a 130min splint AVI file to MPEG format?
On my bothers computer he has a DVD writer so i was wondering if i could convert the AVI to DVD and burn that (although he says this isn't possible, which im sure it ? or just burn then AVI on a DVD-R?
So what I'm asking is, are there any quick, freeware/crackable programs out there to easily split my files and is it possible to just convert and burn the AVI to DVD?
Thx, Mushie Man

Ok, i am now using VirtualDub to slip my files, seems A HELL of alot better to slip with than Nero. Although i did download this program first but didnt seem to work first time around.
Although the questions still remains if I can convert the AVI file into DVD and Burn?

Ok well you can easily split the AVI files with virtualdub for free and burn x number of discs without losing any quality. You can also convert the AVI to MPEG-2 and author and burn it to DVD. For that you will need an mpeg2 encoder or all in one program to help you. TMPGEnc is decent aswelll as CCE. They are not free but can be easily found and easily used freely.
