Storing spent substrate
    #5022460 - 12/06/05 09:17 AM (18 years, 2 months ago)

Hi everyone!

I did some searching about, and I can't seem to find any information on how, or even if, you can safely store spent cakes? My goal is to keep them for about 6 months, until I'm able to spawn them to hpoo. Is it possible to store them for that long? Will they still spawn properly?

I would imagine you could dunk for a few hours to semi-rehydrate your cakes. Then pop 'em in the fridge till you're ready.

Just think: people frequently store completed Liquid Cultures in the fridge for months and they still colonize when injected.

An LC is nothing but live mycelium suspended in a nutrient solution.

Putting it in the fridge forces the mycelium into hibernation.

Seems like the same concept could work for your application.

Yeah, I would say the fridge, but I don't know how well that would work with a substrate that is spent already.....I know it works fine with fresh, fully colonized sub, but I have never tried storing spent sub.

It may work out fine, it's worth a shot.
