Maitake outdoors in southest US?
    #5016995 - 12/05/05 09:27 AM (18 years, 2 months ago)

I have been very successful growing shiitake logs in NE Fl and was wanting to try maitake the same way. However, I have read in GGMM that it is normally found in the northern states, but I live near the coast (were it might not get so hot etc.) and was wondering if I provide plenty of shade if it might do well?
Thanks--

Good luck, I live in the middle of the mid-west, and the only time I see them is when the weather gets cold in October. The cool part is that they re-appear in the same spot, at the same time, every year. When you look closely at the surrounding area, you can tell which trees roots they are growing off of because there is almost always a big dying/damaged Oak tree in close proximity

Some years they take a break from fruiting.
