yeah i think there are some serious problems with this hard-drive and/or cd-rom. unfortunately that is the only computer i have at my house with a floppy drive, otherwise i'd make a boot-disk, reformat and set up the partition, and then try to install again. i guess this gives me motivation to actually go to work, instead of just working from home!

once you get familiar, you'll soon finding yourself not booting into windows and using linux exclusively instead.

Ive never used either ubuntu or freebsd, my school uses Fedora. I got decently good with Fedora, so how do these other Linux variations compare in your opinions? I plan on installing some variation of linux, Im a computer engineer, so I know my way around a computer and am not afraid to learn commands or deal with complexities.

Fedora sucks campared to the rest. If your able to deal with complexities I would suggest either freebsd or gentoo, they leave all the ohters in the dust.

I was reading that freebsd, a lot of open source programs dont work with it for some reason. What are your thoughts on Debian?

I have never had a program source not work for it, the opera binarys are slightly buggy but that is all I have run across.
Debian is too outdated for my tastes, its a very plain distro. I personally think that if you like that style go for slackware.

And gentoo vs. freebsd. My friend uses gentoo but I have never really seen very much of it, looked all pretty standard.

Gentoo is actually quite revolutionary (for linux) everything is compiled for your system, runs like a dream. Offside is it takes a day and a half to set up, but its worth it in the long run. Also you have to know a good ammount of unix stuff to use it and set it up.

What file system should I use with gentoo? I want to be able to play songs from my windows partition while I am on linux.

The file system doesn't matter for mounting a windows partition. Personally I like ReiserFS and XFS, if you want bleeding edge technology Reiser4 is where its at, but with Reiser4 you have to do some extra stuff to compile the kernel, so go with ReiserFS.

automatix was taken down by its author - read the last few pages of that thread. lots of drama - anyway, here's something similiar that you'd like.
you can do all of those things that automatix or whatever the fork is being called quite easily yourself...if you need help, let me know.

debian is too outdated?
do explain yourself!
i haven't had any problems with debian at all, and actually prefer it to FC3 by a long-shot...

By outdated I mean its been around forever and hasn't really changed, it just keeps up with the kernel versions and doesn't do anything new or revolutionary. Most distros ar epreferable to Fedora

i see what you mean, i guess.
but the way i figure, debian has stuck with the same basic principles (apt-get for example) because they work.
