about to install ubuntu!
    #5019183 - 12/05/05 06:09 PM (18 years, 5 months ago)

so my roomate got a new computer, and donated his old one to me - my plan is to have it as a media-center in our living room, attached to our network, so we can play any music on the network through the living room sound-system, as well as hook the computer up to the television there so any movies or television programs we download can be played for all the enjoy. anyway, i've been a debian user for some time now, and have heard quite good things about ubuntu here and elsewhere. so i downloaded the latest iso (5.10, i guess) and am about to install it on this other machine. wish me luck!

I just downloaded it too. Now I've got a stupid question to ask: How do I install it?

Burn a cd with the iso image, and boot with the cd in the drive. The installation should start automatically.

Wait, Krishna, you're gonna use the box with ubuntu as the media center? Are you going to install something like MythTV on top of it? I'm also interested in trying to do a linux box devoted entirely to media, so please, post your results.

I've been using kubuntu and, at this point, have very few complaints. Good luck.

Didn't work. It just booted Windows like normal. What now?

probably press delete or Fsomething on bootup - it'll usually flash 'press delete to enter setup' or something along those lines.

then you'll see some setting to change the boot priority.

if that doesn't work, you can use rawrite on DOS to copy the file install/smb.bin (from the ubuntu cd that you've burned) to a floppy disk - then boot with that disk, and the cd in your harddrive (it'll override the bios settings). however, i'd try to change the bios settings if you can - i started my install with the latter method (because the computer's bios wouldn't read the bloody cd-drive) and i think it loaded the cd-drive at 1X - this is going slow as all hell!

i've previously been using my debian system as a media center, with no problems (was able to go from VGA out directly to an LCD TV, have yet to get the proper converters so I can try it out on the television i have here). mainily use Totem and XMMS, & VLC every now and again.

i doubt i'll install the kubuntu package on top of this, as i much prefer gnome, but i might do it just to check it out.

but holy jesus this install is going slow!

Ok, I've changed the boot priority, and it still won't work.

Alas, this is a laptop, which does not have a floppy drive.

as for this MythTV, i had never heard of it before - doing some research into it now and it actually sounds really interesting. the box that i'm installing ubuntu on currently is actually quite old (i think p2 300 mhz ), and i don't have any of the hardware needed to really run the kind of system that MythTV seems to be (the only 'live' television i can get comes from rabbit-ear antenna's). this box is mainly just going to be for xmms, totem/vlc, and the internet. however, reading through the documentation at http://www.mythtv.org definitely sparks my interest in building a box and trying it out.

my only worry is that it might try to be too 'user-friendly' and end up being cumbersome. usually a 'packaging' of programs isn't really necessary if all the individual ones accomplish their tasks, and you know how to run them all

ok, do you have a usb memory stick or something like that?

and when you change the boot priority, did it say 'scanning cd-rom for bootable disk' or something like that, but then just resolve to 'not bootable' and boot to windows? there are some bios issues with booting from the .iso cd - you might have to boot from another device and then load the cd

pardigm you probably didn't burn it as a bottable iso.

Krishna xine is soooo much better than totem

whoever asked about freebsd, its an operating system based on a kernel made by berkly university. It is more powerful and stable but harder to set up and takes more knowledge of unix.

i really don't like xine, i'm not quite sure why - maybe something about how the window behaves (like how it is sticky, how you open files, etc). i usually use vlc if i'm opening anything from the command-line, otherwise if it auto-loads, it is usually in totem. the only problem i've experienced is when you load a subtitle track (a .srt file) the subtitles are small as hell.

and yeah, it might not be a bootable disk, paradigm. when you load m$ and look at the disk, is it all extracted, or is it just the .iso file? any semi-decent burning program should turn a .iso into an extracted image when burning it, though...

You mean one of those external drives? Ya, but the file was too big.

No, it just went directly to the Windows boot like it always does.

well, if you can browse the cd in windows (thus it extracted the iso properly in burning and the cd should be bootable), and even after resetting your bios to the cd-drive it still boots to windows, then it might be your bios that won't support booting from the cd. without a floppy drive, you could format a usb flash drive and use rawrite on windows to install the sbm.bin file (located at install/sbm.bin on the extracted iso) onto the usb-drive - and then try booting with that...

otherwise an install over a network? or try another distribution's bootable cd (or ubuntu's live cd) and see if they work?

burn the .iso with dvddecrypter - that works.
