reformatting with NO disk
    #5016682 - 12/05/05 06:35 AM (18 years, 5 months ago)

ok, i have a dinosaur computer ( gateway p3 500 running windows 98se)

The other day i accidently shattered my windows disk.

i plan on buying a copy of xp off of ebay ( lisenced, not pirated) gateway wants 300 bucks for theirs.

My problem is, the restore disk offer install windows 95 or windows 98, no xp.

I do have a second disk. that was from gateway from where my video card had went bad, and they sent me a newer model, and i use that disk for getting the video card drivers.

I tried to install windows xp full version ( not an oem) from a friend, but both gateway restore disks doesnt recognize the xp disk as acceptable.

so before i go shell out a hundred bucks for my own copy of xp, how do i go about reformatting without using the restore disk prior to starting the xp installation?

I really doubt that you want to run xp on that machine... it will be painfully slow. XP is a huge resource hog and without a good processor and LOTS of memory, it starts to run even slower than normal.

If you really want to put XP on the system, then avoid the restore CD's and just load the XP directly... if it will go... you may have a hard time finding drivers for all your devices...

In my opinion, trying to install XP on that machine sounds like a joke.

I would recommend looking into a more resource efficient OS. Maybe win2k is a little less of a resource hog than XP, I don't know ...

I'm on an IBM Thinkpad T21 right now. P3 796MHz. With slackware linux, it's doing perfectly fine with basic personal use.

Of course, these are my opinions.
