And they're off... the race has begun.... but what now?
    #5011983 - 12/03/05 09:43 PM (18 years, 4 months ago)

Well guys my journey into growing has begun... but what now. I have purchased 3 strains (John Allen, Equador, and South American)-- mainly for a little variety and they seemed to each have complimentry strengths and weaknesses (Equador seems to grow fast, South American grows huge, and John Allen seems to be good all around from what i've read)...

In any case now that the strains are on their way I seem to be confused -- there are so many diffrent methods and ways of growing. While I can definatly see there is no "best way" perhaps the "simplest" way would be best.

I purcased all three strains in syringes from spores101 (I have a journal on here with a pic of the order if you want to see)...

I know I now need to make or order inoculation jars and a way to incubate them into mycelium. I've read in some places a kit is best, but most people here suggest making my own. What would be a good (reasonably priced) way of doing this. I've seen hundreds of diffrent teks and most of them are VERY veague. I'd also like one thats proven with the substrate i'm going to use.

Thanks a ton in advance for the answers... Once I get this project off the ground hopefully i'll be able to pass this knowledge on to others here as well.

if you're on a budget, it would be best to collect your own materials

a case (12) of 1/2 pint wide mouths, goes for about $6-7

Vermicutlite and a bag of whole grain brown rice is cheap.

and don't forget to save one jar for LC.

Well thats the plan at this point (sorry if that was somewhat confusing). Basicly i'm looking for advice on the best way to build my grow setup as a newbie. Should I use Rye, Grain, etc.? I was considering using tennstud for at least one of the strains but wasn't sure if that was my best bet. Not sure if it makes any diffrence (i've seen conflicting posts some saying growing with one substrate is better than others for this) but i'm looking to grow shroomies with more visual if  it's possible to control that.

Basicly what I'm pretty sure i'll need is an air filter, canning jars (Should I purchase pre-made substrate jars from mushbox or someplace similar?), substrate, and a tubberware container... I know theres other things i'm going to need.... Just looking for a little advice

What is a pint wide mouth?

LC is something I haven't read up to yet -- from what i've read it's something to do with re-populating the mushrooms?

Like I said i'm still pretty much a newb at this-- please bear with me for a few weeks

the jars commonly used for PF-Tek style growing are 1/2 pint (half pint) wide mouth canning jars.

Ok great  -- Do you guys recommend buying empty jars and making my own substrate than? Or simply buying the pre-made ones?

If you've got cash to blow then yea buy the pre made stuff, but it's really cheap and easy to just do it yourself.

Ok will do. Gonna try the "PK-Tek" method of growing -- it's been recomended to me, especially since I don't yet have a Pressure Cooker.

"LC is something I haven't read up to yet -- from what i've read it's something to do with re-populating the mushrooms? "

a LC is a liquid culture basically what you do i s take a pint jar put water in it with a small amnt of honey, dextrose,Karo, etc etc (just some form of a sugar that myc can eat) sterilize it and then once cool inject with spores then you have a bunch of live mycelium so you dont have to wait for spores to germinate once you inject a jar with it, it begins to grow immediately.

Ok let me see if I have this straight. Basicly once I have growing mushrooms I am going to take a cap and get it to release spores. Once I have some spores somehow inject them into a jar filled with honey water. Once I do this I will grow live mycelium that will be injectable into jars that will from mycelium networks alot faster? Just trying to make sure I have this 100% correct.

yep you got it but you can use some of the syringe that you have now to make an lc instead of waiting to harvest your own.

a wide mouth jar is wider at the top than the bottom, this makes it easy for the cake to slide out of the jar at birthing. Otherwise you will have to dig the cake out of the jar (a normal shouldered jar). Make sure you get the wide mouth.

You will save a ton of money in the long run making your own substrate jars, that will leave you some extra to make a nice incubator and fruiting chamber.

btw welcome to the shroomery and :toast: to a great mycological experience

:peace:

Cap = Spore print

Spore print = Syringe

Syringe into LC = LOTS of live culture

ok cool-- i'll definatly make LC's from the syringes that i'm sent....

How many times can you use this method? I.E. - could you use it to make unlimited spores? or is there a finite number of times this will work?

You can store Lc under refridgeration for considerable periods.

A Master G-1 LC jar can create more LC than you could ever use.

he hasn't even read the manual yet and you guys are suggesting LC's?

not that their tough or anything. but he's at the very start.

ekras, my advice would be to read and read till you're tired of reading. then you smoke some weed. i have read ~150 hours worth of stuff at this site and albeit im not that fast of a reader i still have lots to learn.

Still being a newb myself, but being further along than you are i will say from what ive experienced. Buy a pressure cooker, they arent expensive mine was $12 i think from walmart. You can almost guarantee sterile jars as long as you cook them long enough, and is the best way to do it. Also, if you are going to use rice, i would suggest buying a coffe grinder and griding rice into rice flour. Im not sure how much rice flour costs, but a bag of brown rice is a dollar. The grinder i think was $10. It pays for itself over time, as im sure you dont plan on just one batch:) Not to mention, you can use the grinder to grind the shrrom into powder, and mix that with orange juice or lemonade or the like, from my experience, MUCH more potent, long lasting, and quicker effect than eating them. SO welcome and read lot as said, as to lessen your chance of mistake and disappointment:)
