i just found your site!! i have been cultivating since 1978 and have had quite a bit success with using saved spore prints, Bob's malt agar, whole rye berries, straw and casing made up of 1/2 peat moss, 1/3 vermiculite nad 1/6 perlite- after all these years i find i occasionally become frustrated if crop failure occurs too often- i ususally put things away and start up again in a few months- this has been a recent downtime for me and i am planning to get back in the saddle after the holidays-
what is all this talk of using poo as a medium?? sterilized straw produces exceptional yields-
i am on my fifth glove box to ensure a sterile field when i transfer spores or mycelium- i have developed a skin allergy to bleach over these many years using it a sterilizing agent in my glove box- is there another product that is as effective??

Pine Sol that's diluted works well also. Soap and water is fine really....

most of us don't sterilise straw or poo, but pasteurise it for panaeolus species. we sterilise spawn and woodbased fruiting substrates.
that's a long growing career - what're your preferred species?

i grow cubensis and have had some success in past- the problem i have found with alcohol is that it is flammable- i use an alcohol lamp in my glove box to sterilize my instruments(loop) between innoculations- when i use lysol i have caused some large flameouts with the alcohol lamp- if i can figure out how to post some pix of my crop i will-
i guess i am old fashioned when i read some of the other methods- i start with a spore print that i make on a sterilized plate- i transfer the spores to agar which i have sterilzed in pint mason jars- (i still use Bob's malt agar from 'mushroompeople')- then i transfer the agar to whole rye grain in which i have powdered a few sticks of chalk in and then cooked for twenty minutes to prepare for digestion by the mycelium- the rye is placed in quart mason jars and sterilized- i use two lids with a hole cut in the middle of each and a coffee filter placed between the lids- then i boil my straw in a 100 quart pot for 8 hours- after cooling overnight in covered pot, i transfer the rye to the straw- i put a layer of straw and alternate with a quart jar of rye berries until i have three layers- let it sit without lights for a few days and then case with a mixture of 1/2 peat moss, 1/3 vermiculite and 1/6 perlite(sterilized of course)- put the flourescents on a 12 hour on/off schedule- hand spray with water twice daily and wait to pick!! i only wish it were as simple as i make it sound- contamination is my biggest problem- sometimes i don't lose any and sometimes i have total crop failure- the sour apple mold isn't so bad, but the black mold causes me night terrors!
thanks for all input on my bleach problem and i am happy to have found other mycophiles like myself!!

Instead of beach use Quaternay ammonium it's what kills bacteria in a lot of commercial cleaners, like lysol.
editYou can also get tablets at restraunt and bar supply stores like these or some generic brand. One of these tablets makes about a gallon of disinfectant. They cost like 5 to 10 dollars for a bottle of a 100 tablets.
Listorine also works it contains alcohol, though not as much as Isopropal. There is thymol in Listorine that helps with the killing of the microbes.

i suggest diluted peroxide it works great, thats what i use for all my sterile teks and it hasnt failed me yet, get a spray bottle, fill half with perox. half water, spray down the room , and then ur glove box, maybe a few sprays in the box while ur working, i think your problem with contanms in the straw is b/c u sterilize it completly and therefor you disrupt the natural balance of bacteria to spore or whatever but it opens it up to contams. u shuold pasterize ur straw and see how that works.

Try this, In the holes where you pass your arms in the glove box, install veterinarian insimanation gloves .10$. Where the long gloves starting to be narrow cut them there. Use chirurgical gloves for your hands.10$. You'll still have dexterity and all your arms and hands are cover to protect your self from the stuff you use and your work from you.
