not hunting exactly...

Okay this does not really belong in the hunting forum because all of these are cultivated. But I am making a list that I am going after next season to eat, and some of the supermarket varieties (which are damn extensive) overlap with the ones I can hunt.
I told you a while ago that I have been after shaggy manes. Well. I can just buy em.

I bought some pizza from the supermarket, put a little bit of anchovy from the tube (regardless of whatever else it looks like) and cooked it. It was very good.
This next dish was kind of a failure.
This ia pleurotus enrygii

A fine mushroom if you look at it like this, but a sweet taste to it that was not great.
I fried it,

And put it in chili.

The bigger chunks that did not get the heat from the pan were gross.
And these went into a pot of soup (nabe, if you have been to Japan in the winter).

Should be Flammulina velupites and the others are some kind of Lyophyllum, not sure of the species. I go to the store every day so I should be able to get to the bottom of this tomorrow. In the meantime, I have a question for you. What kind of mushrooms are sold in your supermarket?

What kind of mushrooms are sold in your supermarket?

Button mushrooms (white and brown), shiitake, oyster mushrooms, Flammulina velutipes, elm oysters, king oysters, and in season, chanterelles and funnel chanterelles (Cantharellus tubaeformis).

The availability varies, but button mushrooms and shiitake is a safe bet at any time. The others I have seen more sporadically.

Nice! I wish my grocery stores carried that stuff.. pretty much all we get are oysters, agaricus bisporus, f. velupites, and shiitake.
I always stock up on dried and frozen stuff that I pick from the wild or cultivate during winter months.. seems like most people around here aren't big on mushrooms.

I wondered that myself about the shaggies, if sold at all I'd imagine them being sold freshly picked at open air markets, the plastic seal makes it look as though they're intended to be kept on the shelves for awhile which is strange.

that's neat though that you can find them at a store though. I should find the pics I took from my mushroom feast, I can't even tell you how elated I was to find a ton of chanterelles in the woods, it was like striking gold.
