What happened to the "screensaver only" version of the program?
I absolutely hate having the thing running 24/7 down in my system tray, and have ALWAYS used the screensaver-only version.
Now I can't find it for download on the page anymore.
Anyone know what happened to it?

Use the console version! It runs without a trace, you'll never even know it's there unless you check the task manager. Please read this post for instructions on getting it installed.

does it shorten the life of your CPU to keep it ramped up like that all the time?

Technically probably yes, unless you have some crazy water cooling setup which keeps your CPU temp the same at idle and full load. However, given the pace of technology, I can virtually guarantee your cutting edge CPU will be obsolete before you have to worry about any electromigration caused by folding 24/7. The only possible scenario I can think of where it could harm your computer is if your CPU fan failed. At zero load your heatsink might be able to pick up the slack, but at full load your chip could fry very quickly. However, any current system has overheating protection and even a fan failure would just cause it to shut down. Don't just take my word for it through, look at FAH's popularity within the computer enthusiast community. If it had a detrimental effect on your PC you can bet the hardware sites wouldn't be promoting it.
Hope this helps,

I'm not a fan of having other things take up CPU time while I am actually using my computer, which is why I've always used the screensaver version. I've tried both the graphical and console versions over the past week and they both annoy the hell out of me
I can certainly tell it's there and running, anyway.
Did they discontinue the screensaver-only version? I was using it when it just stopped updating, I think in september or october. I haven't had it on since

That's the thing, it doesn't take up CPU time when you're actually using your computer. It runs at idle priority which means it gives up CPU cycles to any other process which asks for them. It simply won't affect your performance on any modern preemptive multitasking OS unless you've got like 16MB of RAM, and even then you can configure memory limits. I don't buy that the console version annoyed the hell out of you. You can't be annoyed by a program you don't even know is running.
