I've read some where that plasma TVs tend to get dead pixels after awhile. Was I dumb not to pay the extra money in order to have a 2 year extention on store return if the tv messes up? I'm wondering if I should make my way back up there and try to get one now (it's been a week so I don't think they are going to be too keen on the idea.

From my experience working at CompUSA, extended warranties are a rip. They have the highest profit margin of anything in the store with the possible exception of shit like $15 network cables. Everyone there wants you to buy them, from the managers who are concerned with the bottom line to the salepeople who want the commission payments. They will almost certainly sell you an extended warranty after the fact, but you'll probably have to cart the TV back down there so they can verify it's still working first.
So is it worth it? You're asking people to make a value judgement for you but you have to do that yourself. If $300 is worth the peace of mind to you then it's a good investment. If you prefer to play the odds then it's a rip-off. Personally, I only get the extended warranty if I'm buying a product near the end of its lifespan and I have plans for it to "break" in a few years so I can get the newer model.
Hope this helps,
-Y

As Ythanb said for many things is just extra profit for the store.
Plasma's are relatively new so perhaps it would have been a good idea. HOWEVER, it seems to me that if there were widespread problems with plasma TV's we would have heard about them, and they would have been worked out by now.
Also, keep in mind that currently, you can buy EDTV's for around $1K-1500. In 3-5 years the ass will drop out on them and you'll be able to get a bran new one for about half. At least thats my guess. I've been following the market on a wholesale website I uese and since august 14th, the price of a "cheaper 50 inch plasma" has dropped from about $2800 to $1999.
Simply put, in my opinion, by the time it breaks you'll want a new one. Also, remember the MANUFACTURER'S warranty should be about a year.

extended warrenties generally have a bad rep.
However, some people've made out like bandits with them - buying a two year extended warrenty on their mp3 player, and coming in 1 year 11 mos later to exchange their perfectly functional but used mp3 player for the newer model w/ larger hard drive.
Depends on the terms of the contract - but, if you drop $300 on a warranty, you should plan on exchaninging it.

If you have video problems with new video equipment, it will almost always show up before the normal warranty expires. LCD and CRT displays my employer makes are usually given a 4-6 hour 'burn in'. If there are no pixel/line drop-out after 4 hours, the displays will last a very long time. Sometimes items that have finely aligned moving parts, or equipment that can be affected by dust (DVD players, VCRs etc) will have problems developer after the warranty expires.
If you buy from a retailer who values customer service, going through a regional or district manager will often get results if a warranty is expired (or not honored)
BTW extended automobile warranties are NEVER honored.

Thanks for the info guys. I was kinda crapping my pants b/c I bought this thing on the fly with 10 minutes left on the sale. I didn't research it very much and was afraid I had bought some piece of crap. Everything seems to be fine though and it got some good ratings.
