First timer...first signs of growth
    #5000264 - 11/30/05 08:22 PM (18 years, 2 months ago)

here it is, picture isnt great..if it isnt good enough ill try and get a  better cam.  Question: is this cobweb mold or early signs of mycellium growth? i looked at tons of pics and found some that look exactly like this but some say "this is my mycellium" and some say "cobweb mold, watch out" i dont want to get all excited about it and it just be some hope crushing mold  thank you for any input.
EDIT: this is after 4 days of growth, most all of my other jars have this white stuff on them

Im no pro, but to me it looks like mycelium, cobweb mold usualy from my experience will colonize the entire cake almost instantly, much faster than normal myc, so that has always been a big indicator for me. It seems, when there is a gap between the cake and jar, the myc can resemble cobweb mold quite a bit. But judging by the deep white, that is defenitely myc. Ur all good man.

Hard to tell by the pics, but if ALL jars have the same "condition" at all inoculation points, I'd say it's probably mushroom.

Yeah they all have it, there are little green specs in 6 of the jars, i wasnt sure if it was mold but i moved them out anyway, i didnt throw them out cause the green was in one little spot and i didnt want to waste 6 jars if they were still good, but from my research i take it anything other then white is bad, correct?

The mold will spread, you may be able to save ti before it spreads too far, as i currently am having success with saving lightly molded cakes that are not completely colonized. You could try removing the cake, removing the mold and a bit of substrate beneath it, re sterilizing the jar, washing with bleach should work, and try putting the cake back in. Most will tell you to throw it away, but, again im no pro, but from what ive esperienced with my cakes, if you try to save them sson enough it seems, so far to be working just fine. Just my 2 cents. Mold does seem to grow faster than myc in most cases so now would be the time to try something if you dont want to just give up on them.

Some yellow and light brown could still be ok, but green specks are bad. It's good you separated them. Since the mycelium just started growing, it you've got contams, there's no hope for them. So long as they're far away from your good jars, might as well keep them a few more days just to make sure.

Also, if you do have contams, let's figure out how they got there so it doesn't happen again. How did you sterilize your jars? Did you use the Lysol liberally? Did you sterilize your needle before each jar?

I was a slob until I decided to grow shrooms. Now my mother and GF both ask why my house is so clean and fresh all the time  Thank you mushrooms!

Well i didnt bother to PC them (i dont have one) but i used tons of lysol all over the kitchen, i knocked the dust off the ceiling, i washed all my utensils with 99% isopropyl alchohal and flamed the syringe and the nail i used to poke the holes in the lids.  Im guessing its because i skipped over the PC. Heh the first time is to get the learning curve out of the way

Well, I hope you get a few good jars at least. I wasn't going to buy a PC, but I finally did, just so I would quit pondering whether I should or not.

Yep, I did everything right... then started to incubate my jars on a heating pad, lost half of them :frown:

Did the same thing with a heating pad but luckly i caught it before to long..no more then 30 minutes. Also i have another question, is it bad to frequently check your jars? like by picking them up and looking at them? I read that you are just supposed to put them somewhere dark and warm and leave them but im a little parinoid of contams so ive been checking them almost every day.
