I use my neighbor's connection to downlaod large files, mainly becuase it is
1) faster.. and
2) not my connection (Yeah..kinda fucked up, but..he should secure it!)
I get this sometimes

Does this mean my poor neighbor has no access while I am sucking up his bandwith? Because now I DO feel bad

Move to New Oreleans. They are suppose to be installing a city-wide wireless network that is free for all citizens.

Yeah I saw that -- that'll help lots of people in the Katrina areas...or not
I wonder how they swung that without violent outcry and lawsuits by internet providers...

I didn't hear when it's suppose to happen. I suppose the city is going to pay the isp enough money for it to work out.

Ha thats how I had internet for all of last year. Thats what happens when the cable people try and charge an EE student 60 dollars a month for internet. Of course I also had to illegaly hack into their system... But I think if its unencrypted its not illegal, as you can just claim it would automatically connect to it.

they should be having internet in the next 2 weeks. although you can pretty much go anywhere now, and pick up someone's wireless internet. it isnt your fault for borrowing their bandwith it is their fault for not encrypting it. WarDriving is LEGAL http://www.politechbot.com/p-03884.html

I can't cite the law but I thought there were provisions that upped the punishment for committing illegal acts on someone else's connection.
For example, Wardriv3r uses Schmoe's wireless connection to access kiddie porn. The FBI investigates Schmoe and follows the trail to Wardriv3r. Wardriv3r gets popped for kiddie porn AND for using Schmoe's connection to commit the crime.
I forget the precedent but It was discussed on an early episode of The Broken and some time ago at Slashdot.

sounds like a supplementsl charge. they use shit like that to up bail money/court fines/jail time. also, several misdomeners=felony. i doubt cops will ever come kick a door in just for logging on.

one might interpret an open access point as express permission considering how trivially easy it is to secure.
i can swallow making it illegal to use a secured network w/o permission despite the security being trivially easy to circumvent.

Is there any way to enforce this "law"?
