Need rcommendations for a new receiver ($200-$400)
    #4999422 - 11/30/05 04:48 PM (18 years, 5 months ago)

So I got a bad ass new TV and want to upgrade my reciever to surround sound. There seem to be plenty out there that meet my price range. I've had my eye on a few and I would like to keep the price towards the lower end of my budget. Can anyone give me a definate do or don't as far as what receivers you have experience with. The more channels the better, but I can deal with a 6.1 system if it's a great deal. It seems like the Onkyo TX-SR503 has gotten some good reviews. Any thoughts?

My only thought:

It seems to me that by far and away, Dolby Digital 5.1 is still the dominant format.  In fact, I believe the movie Saw (part 1) is the only movie I've seen thus far that has 6.1.  Thus, even if you have a 6.1 receiver the 6th channel will likely be matrixed (although in the future many movies may be 6.1).

Remember that if you're adding channels you'll (obviously) have to get more speakers (do you have enough speakers for 6.1?).  Keep in mind other things as well:

1. Room size (IMO you'll need a VERY large room to here discret channels with a 6.1 receiver)

2. Inputs/outputs.  Again, I'm not up to par on whats available, but for my system I'd need an optical input for DVD AND my CD player, PLUS another digital coaxial for the digital cable.  My current receiver only has 1 optical input :frown:

there's probably other intangibles unique to your situation too: Other speakers in different rooms, budget, etc.

Good luck!, lemme know what you decide.

Pick up the latest Wired mag--some great reviews in there.
