Blender Tek for casing
    #496714 - 12/20/01 05:22 AM (21 years, 3 months ago)

it seems to me that since mycelium is very strong, to the point that some have even suggested that if u toss a cake into a blender, it'll survive and still be strong enuff to colonize your mediums.

we just had the idea of tossing a pf cake into a blender to seriously break it down, and use this in a simple 50/50+ casing tek. This would make a nice level center layer to the casing and at the same time provide more surface area to work with.

my only concern is whether or not to blend it with or without water.

Theoretically, if we add 1/4 to 1/2 cup water per cake to the blender, we'd get a nice mushy mixture. This water would shortly seep down into the Lower Verm layer and continue to feed the casing in the long run.
At the same time, if it runs down, it willl no longer pose the threat of drowning the mycelium and thus let it colonize throughout the casing faster. (increased surface area)

if anyone has an opinion on this idea, please tell me what u think

thanks
a.k.a.

Tried it, didn't do too well. Had much better luck crumbling the cake finely. You can go pretty small. But the blender method didn't take very well.

This guy I knew blended a few cakes to case, he used clear trays with foil wraped around them. The mycelium grew a bit more after two days in the incubator, but then started to turn blue and later on into a brownish color. He also blended some cakes to spawn horse dung and straw, the mycelium did very well. 100% colonization within a week. I guess you have to introduce more nutrients for the mycelium to be healthy.

that was exactly my idea.
so did your friend just blend the cake dry and threw it into the pasteurized straw, then covered with dung?

it seems that doin that would increase the surface area of the mycelium and give it more places to grab onto the straw.
and i really like how u say it fully colonized in a week, so can u ask your friend how many cakes he blended and how big was the container in which he cased them?

thanks a lot

Yes the cake was blended dry, no water was added. Straw and horse dung were spawned seperatly. After being pasturized the horse dung was filled up halfway in a ziplock gallon bag and mixed with a half pint brf cake. Did three bags like this. Rolled the bags up, poked six holes in each and put all three in a spawn bag. After being pasturized the straw was left to drain for six hours in a rubbermaid. An inch of straw was layed in a bucket then poured some of a blended one pint brf cake on top, repeated four times. Then covered the bucket with lid. Dung was cased about two days ago, almost ready for birth. Straw was birthed without casing.
