So I got a Maxent 42" Plasma TV that was on sale at Best Buy thinking that I was going to be able to check out all of the channels on TV in a better quality than my regular TV. But, all the old channels that are still analog look like crap. For those that have these tvs, are you in the same boat until all the channels are in HD or does my new expensive toy suck?

what he said. if you feed crap into it, it's gonna spit crap back to you. motorolla makes an hd reciever/dvr complete w/ component outputs. give that a shot and see if it helps.

If the quality of your video source hasn't changed, the picture quality won't change. When you take a video source and enlarge it (e.g. getting a larger TV) it will only enhance artifacts.
also, determine whether you have an EDTV or HDTV. There is a difference. In any event, the solution would be to get HD programming (even if you have an EDTV the TV can "downregulate" an HD signal to EDTV). Also, be aware that you can receive HDTV for free, "over-the-air". To do this, you'll need an antenna however, and be within range of a signal. There are engines where you can input your address and determine your chances of receiving a signal, google them to find out.
EDIT: one last thing, check your inputs and choose the best input connection. A digital input would be optimal (DVI or HDMI) but if you don't have the option go for component (which isn't to be confused with COMPOSITE).

Well I've got an EDTV and HD programing. The HD channnels are perfect, it's just everything else that looks like crap. The tech from the cable company came out and said that I just had to deal with it until all the channels were HD. I was just wondering if everyone else was in the same boat. Looks that way.

Well a lot of times tech's don't know their ass from their elbow about these types of things. You can tell this because an EDTV cannot display HDTV (it will look better but doesn't contain all the pixels).
Here is your solution: A progressive scan DVD player.
This will give the maximum picture resolution that your TV can display. If it still isn't what you want, return it. (The majority of DVD players are progressive scan unless you got one when they first came out). Hook up the DVD with the best connection you have and what you see is what you get. Good luck!

S video CANNOT display High defintion.
Component and DVI/HDMI are the only two formats that can display high definition on consumer TVs.
DVI/HDMI is the best since it is digital, unless your running more than 20 feet of wire. You would have to have a pretty insane setup, BIG $$$ or 30 feet long wires, though to see the difference between HDMI and component inputs.
