mountaineering boats for Jim
    #4978739 - 11/25/05 12:54 AM (18 years, 2 months ago)

yeah, time for me to stop dicking around with the sorels every year. i fucking hate their incompatibility with cramp-ons and snowshoes.

Im looking at these two models.

Vasque Alpine GTX Mountaineering Boot

$250.

or the Asolo Titan GTX Mountaineering Boot

$265

Im thinking about going with the Asolo's cause they are over a pound lighter...

oDin, summit, what do you guys think???

Merrills are awesome, and you pretty much hit the nail on the head, once you try them you never go back.

If I were you, I'd go with Asolo, because it's the type of shoe that more professionals use. The support on the Asolo is made of carbon and kevlar, which are far superior to the polyurethane and fiberglass that the Vasque offers. Also, the Asolo is a bit lighter and has nylon in the uppers which will add a little more water resistance.

Just my two cents.

I've been hiking in a pair of Vasques for about 10 years. Don't know the exact model but they are not a full moutaineering boot. More like a backpacking boot. Paid $215 for them in about '95. But they have been a damn good boot! The most comfortable peice of footwear I've ever owned. I'll definately buy another pair when these ones are done.

I think these are my boots. Not sure if its the exact same model as they were making 10 years ago but they look the same and the specs sound about right.

CLICKY

well brands can be person specific

Ive had merrills, garmonts, raichles and cheaper ones over the years

to date i liked the raichles and the garmonts ( http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detai...D=1133315457186 ) the best for me. annie recently got a pair of asolo and loves them, she has many problems finding footwear and had to take a pair of sportiva mountaineering boots back due to blisters even after wearing them for almost a year.

i suggest trying on all kinds of pairs and wearing them inside the store. hike around alot with them even if you decide to get them online. one nice thing about getting them thru rei or mec (mountain equip coop, Canadian rei basically) is that they have a unconditional guarantee. annie took her boots back after a year of moderate to heavy use and rei took them back with out batting an eye. so that can be important when your shelling out alot of cash for footwear.

so imo FIT is the more important than brand

on a side note, the garmonts i wear, the soles were wearing out prematurely imo. so i took them back to mec in calgary when i was there. they resoled them and i waited and waited to get them back. so finally i call them and say wtf, so the sent me a brand new pair. a few days later i got the resoled ones. heh so now i have 2 pairs of mountaineering boots. i should send the new ones back, but im sure they already wrote the resoled ones off as a loss

to do the right thing or be greedy?

basically, they cant resell them if you wore the new ones, and they sure as shit aren't going to resell ones you smelled up for a year, so you are in the clear.

Its like when you are at a fast food restaurant and they give you extra food. You could be honest and give it back, but then they will just throw it away and it goes to waste.
