Actually you'd be surprised.....

I find this applies for most of the time:

We lock a thread, and no new ones pop up. The fundamental issue, which is usually some kind of vendor-vendor or vendor-random person rivalry, is not resolved (nor is it resolved with open threads - the point being I don't think it'll ever get resolved - you can't make people like each other by leaving a thread open). So they shut up in that thread and wait for the next time it comes up to bicker. Then that gets closed, and we have peace for two weeks until it starts again.

I'd rather have peace for two week intervals than not at all.
