Got a new digicam in the mail today, wanted to relay some pics of my cat's first jars. They are Thai KS, and seem to be going well so far. There seems to be a brownish orange splotch on the cake on the left, that appeared after a noticeable amount of condensation had formed, is this water damage or possibly a contam? The jar on the right has visible condensation on it, I know a little is normal, but is there too much? The same splotch is begging to appear on the right one. Also, would this point be a good time to flip the jars, or should I wait until growth has slowed considerably? (It seems to still be going fine)

Looks alright...just keep an eye on it and it will either spread or go away. If you are concerned you can flip the jars, to release Co2 and drain excess moisture. I dont think you have to worry though it looks good.

Just an update, water damage getting a lil worse on one cake, i inverted them to see if i can get some of the moisture to drain, all seems to be sticking to the sides though.

Hey! I have the same spots on some of my jars, I was just about to post and ask if it might be a contam. I took the 4 jars that had this and cased them today, i have 4 more in straw right now without the spots, so we'll see how it goes. Mine are Thai Lipa Yi btw...

The stuff in duzz's pics are The GOOO. Stuff is hanious. Really can't do anything about it, I dont think it will hurt the cakes that bad. I have a jar right now that has the goo in the bottom of it and it is invitro pinning, so my guess is that it really doesnt harm the mycellium all that much.

Yeah, I've noticed that the stuff is pretty damned sticky....banged the jar on the phone book to try and get some of the condensation to run to bottom (top verm layer) of the jar, but it didn't budge.

I have had people say they were but no orders in my hand yet. Why would you like some references? I think that once I get my site finnished I will (hopefully) get a little bit of buisness.

I should probably throw these out. I am getting lazy. I have like 5 jars in my closet that I have been meaning to clean out because of this goo but I haven't got around to it.

That looks bacterial to me. If you want to try something(I haven't), wait until full colinization and then dunk your cake in a 95% H2O to 5% H2O2 for a couple hours. See if it kills it. Your mycelium may get slightly harmed too, but it will recover nicely.

I figured it was either starch or bateria. It doesn't smell that bad, not as bad as everyone describes it so that is what makes me think it might be starch. I am throwing the jars out today I guess. I had already tried to dunk it, it just disapeared for a while and then came back again. Oh well. You win some you lose some.
