depends on the tv. if you have an lcd plasma or hidef tube tv then you can hook up the laptop directly with a vga cable(monitor cable) If its a reg tube tv then you need a rca hookup from your laptop. some laptops have composite video out. what brand model laptop do you have?

Well, you'll need to know two things:
1. The type(s) of inputs on the TV. 2. The type(s) of outputs on the laptop.
I would take a wild guess that unless you have a high-end TV, you probably have composite inputs (the red white and yellow plugs).
As far as the laptop is concerned I'm not sure if they come with these types of outputs. Maybe you'll have to buy a card, maybe it's just not an option.
Okay, I found a pic. The back of the TV will probably Look similar to this. If you have similar looking outputs on the comp, buy some composite cables and match the inputs (color-to-color).

Laptop S video out to an RF modulator ($20 Walmart) will allow you to watch movies even on a crappy motel TV.

Good idea, but do most laptops have an S-Video out? (I don't think I've even seen a desktop with one)

Well, if you have an S-video input on the TV, you can do a direct connection (s-video to S-video). S-video is becoming pretty common on TV's so you may have one. For instance, I bought a "higher end" 32" TV about 5 years ago and it had one.
If not, I believe you connect the S-video to the RF modulator, then screw that into the TV. (Like an old-school Nintendo connection)

RF modulators turn an incoming s-video or rca signal, plus 2 incoming rca audio feeds, into the old school screw in TV cable standard.
Once you get the T.V. hooked up, you'll have to get it turned on in your laptop's display properties.

try restarting the computer with the TV plugged in and let it "find" it.
then look in control panel/display preferences for adjusting settings.

Usually, there will be a "function key" (like F4 or something) that you need to hold down.

Well if anyone cares..my roommate figured it out... with windows xp right click the background and pull up properties, Settings, Drag icons to match arrangement of monitors. Pretty damn easy all a matter of adjusting.
