    #4980300 - 11/25/05 02:34 PM (18 years, 4 months ago)

My cakes seem rather dry... could I leave them like they are, or will they maybe not even make it? If I should add water, how shouold I do so? thanks

Way to help the guy out hellyeahdude  :shake:

well, you didn't really specify if your cakes are colonizing or fruiting....so I'll try to answer both.

EDIT: Sorry, topic says that they are in the jars still....read the first suggestion. :smirk:

IF YOUR CAKES ARE STILL COLONIZING:

Your cake could be getting dry due to a couple of reasons.  Either you did not add enough water into your substrate mix, or you have your cakes too close to a source of dry heat.  I wouldn't suggest adding water to your jars unless it is in desperate need.  You could open yourself up to contamination that way.  If they are in the jars and look like they are really drying out, and need water...I have added .5-1cc of water which saved them in the past.  Again, only do this if it is a life or death situation.

If they are close to a heat pad or heater, elevate them off of that because that is what is drying you out.

IF YOU ARE FRUITING:

If the cakes look dry and you are fruiting them, take a look at your humidity....that is a good sign that you don't have enough.  You can mist your cakes in this situation to replenish the water.  Usually after birthing, you want to do a dunk and roll to help replenish your water, and hold it in.

Oh well they are colonizing... thanks for the info, well, would adding hyrdogen peroxide be better than adding the water, since less chance of contams?(and the mycelium changes it into O2 and H20)

thanks both of you

Just add a little peroxide to the water.
