Biological Efficiency: An Expression of Yield
    #4970137 - 11/22/05 08:35 PM (18 years, 3 months ago)

For Oyster mushrooms in general, what is the average expected yield to substrate that I can expect. In other words if I had a 45 lb bag of dry substrate and inoculated it and all went well, how many pounds of mushrooms should I expect?

The white button industry refer to this as Biological Efficiency. According to them if I used 45 lbs of dry material that I would get 45 lbs of mushrooms at 100% efficiency. That just seems high but maybe not.

Any comments?

mushrooms are one of, if not the only agricultural products that can receive a 100 percent BE.

however, It is more accurate to base the figures off the perecentage of protein in your substrate.
I read somewhere that for every pound of protein in your substrate, you will get one pound of protein output in mushrooms. But I think that is wet weight.
comparitively, It takes sixteen pounds of protein to produce one pound of protein in beef.
In my experience, from six pounds of substrate, (oak) that had been supplemented by one pound of(rye, and bran). you could expect to get a pound of fresh mushrooms in the first flush. Though it would generally average about 1.44 pounds. I can only assume it is getting the extra weight from the nutrients present in the wood. Which may explain why oyters and others taste better and last longer when grown on a wood based substrated as opposed to supllemented straw, seed hulls, bannana leaves, etc.

It would be a neat experiment to make 9 five pound bags and one 45 pound bag of substrate and compare the yields.

But remember if you have 9 bags and two contaminate you will be okay.
if you have one big bag and it contams your basically screwed and alot of work goes in the compost toilet.

Cubensis has a BE of about 200%, I have surpassed that, or probably equaled it if you count that 200g of "dry grain" is really about 180g if oven dried completely.
