Can Straw be oven pasteurized?
    #497120 - 12/20/01 04:35 PM (21 years, 11 months ago)

Ok -

Gonna do a straw substrate, and was wondering if rather than steeping it in hot h2o, I could moisten my straw and then place it in a closed container and bake it at 170 for several hours.

The only reason I can think of why this might not work is that the steeping leaches unwanted substances from the straw that would be retained in an oven tek.

The reasons for doing it this way would be to more easily control temps of pasteurization and to get more straw into the mix more quickly (my pot is only so big, and I could fit three times as much into foil trays in the oven.)

Opinions/experience wanted,
AE

Fungus feeds off of organic (alive/was alive) matter. The worse thing that I can see hapening is that it isnt sterile enough, you produce some mushy "goo", or God forbid, one could possibly burn the straw. Other than that, it might be worth a "trial run".

Be sure and post your results.
