Couldnt find the answer to this question...

Ok, I have 6 jars that were sterilized about 2 months ago in my closet. I havent inoculated them because I decided to do my other 6 jars first and then do those. They show no signs of contamination and they are all tightly sealed with aluminum foil over them. I was worried about them being dry by now. Do you guys think they are still good or should I inject some water into them? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

They'll be absolutely fine, keeping in place that they've been sealed airtight right during this 2month period? Otherwise, once you've inoculated, take the foil off and tape the holes over with micropore surgical tape, to allow gas exchange. Incubate at about 28 degrees and you'll be good to go :-)

honestly, I disagree with Hyhal.
You could have successful results or you could have contam and wasted your spores. If I were you I'd just empty the jar clean your jar and new substrate. BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY!! Don't waste your time..
Good luck, Cray

Good point to make, although if the jars were completely airtight, I'm not sure how a) contamination particles would've entered or b) them lost moisture. I suppose it would depend on the spore situation of course. Personally, I'd make an LC of them just to be safe.

I have also left jars for much longer than a months time and had very good colonization. Sure some moisture was lost but with the recommendation of some of our elder shroomerites they were left alone and colonized just fine. No addition of water should be needed, unless of course the mix moves around inside the jars like dry sand, then measures should be taken to redo the jars. If they appear just a little dry, the water gained from inoculation will more than compensate for any loss during the time they have sat.
good luck to ya

I have six jars of corn sterilized 2 years ago and I know they're still good , lol.
Oh , and if these are substrate jars , I doubt very seroiusly they are air tight . Wouldn't allow for gas exchange . So , contamination is a possibility .

Sorry about that. 6 jars of brf and vermiculite. They look exactly the same as the day they were sterilized. None of the substrate shakes around in the jar so thats a good sign. I think I'm going to take my chances inoculating them the way they are.

I say go for it . I did up 12 BRF jars alitte over 3 months ago . About a month ago I took them out to test some LC's . I kinda did them up just to see how long they'll last , and to give my Hubby something to do so he'd get outta my way and leave me to do more serious stuff , LMAO. You know . Make him feel helpful without him f*cking anything up , lol.
When I took them out after about 75 days . 6 where showing signs of contam . 2 black and 4 green .
Out of the other 6 , 5 looked OK , maybe a tad dry , and 1 looked like it had already been inoculated , lol .
I inoculated 4 with LC and got these a week later

The 1 that I didn't do anything to looks like this , this was taken today so it's at least 3 months old

The one that looked inoculated looks like this

I'm thinking about fruiting it just to see WTF it is , lol
Jars were BRF , 3/4" verm on top . With tyvel between the sub and metal lid. 4 holes . Stored in dark place with aluminum foil as dust guard.
Good Luck.
