I'm the same way...it's a great browser. I'd use Linux but I've heard it sucks for games and all I play is BF2...

could someone explain to me why the average person would want to run Linux?

I've been running winxp for years now, no viruses, blue screens, runs all my games...so the whole linux promotion thing doesn't really make sense to me.

I'll field this, as I held the same opinion up until about a month ago. Windows is a good OS. XP always ran good for me. But once I got a taste of Linux, I realized just how plain, unimaginative and unacceptable Windows is.

A few of the advantages I've found with my linux distro (kubuntu):
It's actually more user friendly than Windows.
It runs faster for me (and I have a very old machine).
It's insanely flexible and can be precisely customized very easily.
It's so damn easy to get and install programs.
A new release comes out like every 6 months, keeping it on the cutting edge.
The community is outstanding!!!! They will help you with anything!
It's made with 100% love.

Now, to be fair, I'll give the disadvantages I've encountered:
Games have to be emulated (not sure how much this affects performance).
Lots of open source equivalent software isn't quite where it needs to be (gimp (photoshop) is my main complaint).
As far as I'm concerned, there isn't a solid all-around media player that compares with itunes or wmp... yet. And I'd literally kill for something like Windows Media Center or Mac Front Row.
Hardware support can be touchy (though I haven't had any problems).

Do yourself a favor and give it a try (it's free after all).
You might love it, you might hate it.

I myself still haven't made up my mind. I'm either going to build a new 100% linux box, or I'm going to bite the bullet and pay dearly for a Mac (as great as kubuntu is, it still doesn't rival Mac OSX).

Hope this helps.

i actually ran linux for years before i started using xp...those were the days of win95/98, when blue screens were an every day event :frown:

but once xp came out and i found it extremely stable, i made the permanant switch.  im not a programmer or anything so it doesnt make sense to me to run it.

the sheer number of pirated windows installations and office installations is a boon to M$ regardless of whether or not those people paid for it. the fact is, the workplace DOES pay for every single copy of every single M$ product and the biggest reason businesses buy into M$'s lock-in is because Joe User has been using Windows at home and it greatly reduces training and support costs to provide him with the familiar Windows environment.

it's all a vicious circle that I try to avoid. i admit that XP is a damn good OS from a corporate cubicle drone POV and it works pretty well on the home desktop but only because all the hardware and software produced is written for it as a priority. i still keep windows around simply because the rest of the world uses it. I have not found a suitable replacement for Excel or MSMoney/QuickBooks. i am booted into Linux as often as possible and i push open source answers to those who ask questions.

And we just got Quake 4 and Doom 3. Battlefield 2 works alright in Cedega.

I really don't understand the whole Linux thing, nobody can really present a solid arguement as to why the average person should run it. I've tried it before and let's just say it's not that easy to get everything up and running perfectly. I've had to spend hours upon hours trying to figure out why my network, video and sound aren't working properly. then after a few days when I finally got everything working properly I find that games run like shit compared to windows...so it really makes no sense for me to run it. like ive already said before, i havnt gave ms a single penny...so i really dont see where the problem is.

Then it has been a while since you tried it. It typically takes me 20 minutes to have configured install up and running. Compelling reasons to run it abound. It comes with all of the tools you need to do just about everything. It is for practical purposes virus free. It is more stable than Microsoft's offerings. It is free to use or modify.

I was in a similar situation when I first switched to linux. I did it only because I was interested in it, and soon after I simply preferred it to windows. All of the benefits anyone else would say, really.

How did this go from a Firefox thread to another Linux thread.. instantly??

I think we can also agree that linux works at least equally fine, and is free. Furthermore, we can agree that the average user isn't a fan of spyware and viruses.

Hijacking threads does suck, though.

while that mostly is true, if you really know your shit i think you can configure it well enough to not really degrade the quality of game-play. i'm not arguing that it is incredibly easy to play windows games on a gnu/linux machine, but that it is possible. i would argue, though, that it is fairly easy to set-up and learn to use a gnu/linux machine, and that such a machine is a hell of a lot better than a comparable winblows machine.

i totally agree man, my ONE and only problem with linux is the whole game thing. i used to play a lot of Unreal Tournament and CS, and when I tried them both on linux I was horrified...and that's with games that aren't even being emulated!

now if I was to put...let's say, Age of Empires III with all visual settings on high in linux...I guarantee it would run like shit, where it runs just perfect on winxp.

and to even get that game running would probably take hours if not days figuring out all the stupid emulation options and whatnot.

ill be staying away from linux until the day it runs all the games as good if not better then windows. and without all the hassle.

im not going to pretend i know all the inner workings of windows and linux, but for me, and 80% of the computer using population...windows works just fine .  even if windows is horrible coded under the hood or whatever...i really see no problems from the users point of view.  let me also say that i wouldnt of said this in the days of win95/98...but i really have to say im impressed with winxp.

My games run blazingly fast, my programs never crash...no blue screens...and so on.  The only thing that pisses me off from time to time is the way spyware somehow finds it's way on my computer.  but that's not too big of an issue as there's tons of software out there to stop it.

that's why people dual-boot.
windows for games
linux for everyday use.

oh, even though I do not really play games anymore
because that shit is boring
my framerates are just the same on linux & windows
using my ATI card. yeah, that's right - ATI on linux.

video drivers are getting better and better for linux
so your past experiences might not be valid anymore.

well, one non-computing related reason i use linux is pretty much the same reason that i shop at my local food co-op - because i like to deal in economies that i support.

(albeit, the greatest reason is because of perl/mysql/apache and my job)

Unix emulation is mere microseconds slower when set up properly, when you had linux and games were running slowly it is probably because your graphics driver was not set up properly. I have seen it for myself, when I use flgrxconfig I usually get around 500 fps, but when I set it up myself I get around 1700 fps (more than I get on windows with omega drivers btw), big difference.

actually my drivers and everything were setup perfectly.  i checked with  some linux guys on newsgroups and my fps was right around where it should have been.  and it was still slower then on windows...maybe it was the AA or AF or something...who knows.  either way id never switch to linux because its a pain in the ass and id rather just put my game cd in, install, play without all the hassle
