Now that I have your attention.  I need a question answered  :blush:
And better yet it's a question about drying temperature  :rolleyes:

Well I bought an american harvester dehydrator.  It only has one setting, ON! 
I checked it with a therometer running temp is about 140!  Yes I have been searching.  Turns out that's on the high side for sure.  I've heard you shouldn't go over 110 - 120.  So what do you guys think? 
Should I return it?  Any way's of making this work.... :confused: I know fire is bad....but....  no best not to tinker I guess.

If you tried a search for "heat + potency", you would get the answer. No, it doesn't matter. Mid 100's will be ok.

i stand corrected, but still check out the idea of a space heater  :smirk:
yea 140 probably isnt a good idea lol. if you really wanted to keep the dehydrator u bought, i think if u bought a vary-ac (spelling??) you could lower the temp. whatever it's called, im referring to a device that allows you to control the voltage on the circuit. if u lessen the voltage, the electricity comes through with less force, thus less energy to be resisted in the heating element, and ultimately possibly a lower temperature. now thats if u like toys and have the money. i also don't know if that would work, it's just a theory and the best proof for a theory is experimenting.

wut i do kno for sure is that i bought a space heater that has a thermostat in it. so u can set it at 65 70 75 80 degrees
and it will maintain the temperatur but neevr go too much above it. i found however that when u set it for 70, it goes to 80-85 lol. so when u set it for 75 or 80 u'll get the desired temperature of 90-95 for drying. on top of that its also using a fan to disperse this heat. moral of the story? the thing doubles as a nice dehydrator as well as a nice clean waterless less fragile non fire hazard incubator heater. all i did with mine is cut a hole in a 50 gallon or so tub and put the heater in it and duct taped the openings. keeps a nice solid 85 deggrees when i want it to incubate and i can't wait to try it for dehydrating. and by the way i paid $15 for my heater at a flea market new in the box, but i have seen them at big y around the same price maybe $5-10 more at most. if ure paying much more than that its a rip off anyway. good luck and i hope i helped at least a little.

LOL holy. You see. This is perfect example of conflicting information. And I did read that link you sent me already. That's why I bought the dehydrator in the first place. Before that post I was doing fanning and desiccants only. The thing is. I have heard countless times you need it to be around 90. That's pretty common. I was thinking the unit would run around 120. When I saw 140 that seemed pretty high. Just thought I would get a few more opinions.

And BTW. I was searching for Dehydrators not heat+potency. Which makes way more sense. I have never been good with search engines.

Well first I will see if I can notice any loss in potency at 140. If I think they are weaker then I think next will try to add some variable resistance in series with the heating element. I will just have double check that I'm not surpassing the power rating. I don't need any melt downs.

I always read the box, then open it & eyeball the item I am buying. I do so, to make SURE it is the RIGHT ONE, I want.

Take the one you bought BACK, get a refund & replace it with the right American Harvest dehydrator (SnackMaster), with the temperature control, for like $7 or $9 more.



This one has extra trays added on.

SO agar you feel that 140 degrees is too hot? This is all they had at this walmart but I'm sure I could find more. BTW. I like the new aviator. Don't know where it's from but its cool.

140F seems to do no harm.

I just prefer 95 to 110F for drying.

Well I guess once again it comes down to finding out for myself. I will keep these bad boys separate from the rest of them and see if I notice a difference. In the mean time I will look for something adjustable.
