can i use pasta sauce jars etc...
    #4946607 - 11/17/05 01:41 PM (18 years, 4 months ago)

My friends mom is starting a grow backup and forgot if regular clean spaghetti sauce, and other consumer waste glass jars can be used to spawn myc. via syringe through a polyfil filter. Not PF grow, WBS to bulk straw tubs.

I saw in a couple posts some people are putting filter paper inside the jar as well as polyfil on the lid is this common procedure these days or just extra precaution?

Thanks,
rt

I'm guessing youll be sterilizing in those jars......alot of glass jars arnt rated for heat, or pressure for that matter, both of which a pressure cooker uses to sterilize grains.....so I wouldnt pressure cook any glass that isnt rated for it, youll get cracked and exlpoded jars. That is, if your using a pressure cooker....which you should be with grains.

Most pasta sauces ARE pressure sterilized to begin with and the jars will easily handle the heat. You won't have the jars completely sealed when you are doing your sterilization, so don't worry about pressure building up in the jars. Just make sure that you keep them off the bottom of the pot when sterilizing with a rack or towel. Even canning jars that are specifically intended for this purpose can crack from sitting on the bottom.

FooMan - What would be your recommendation for filter material on WBS jars? My friends mom is leaning towards polyfil. She does inoculate under a ghetto hood so contam are not usually are problem at the jar stage stage of cultivation.

My friends mom counted her pantry and she has 32 eligible jars that are now jars that do not have to be bought.... Most are of quart size. She is wondering if it is worth the time to remove the paper labels and glue from the jars?

just soak the jars in water...and the labels usually come right off.

or run them through the dishwasher a few times and they will come off...
be sure to pull the labels out of the bottom of your dishwasher, you wouldn't want your dishwasher backing up and not draining properly.
